A Study of Anal Sex in the City
The NYC Department of Health released a report yesterday, "Women, Unprotected Anal Sex and HIV Risk," that says women use condoms far less than men when doing butt-related naughty things. They polled women between the ages of 18 and 64.
The report has some scary numbers. For instance, 74,000 new STD infections are reported every year in NYC (yikes!), and only 23% of women who have anal sex with men use condoms. 61% of gay men do wrap it up.
The risk of HIV infection is also far greater for heterosexual women:
Anal membranes are easily damaged during sex, facilitating the spread of infection. Past studies suggest that anal exposure to HIV poses 30 times more risk than vaginal exposure.
In short, use a fucking condom. Even if you're one of the seasoned 64-year-olds from the study. And maybe stay away from bars on Ludlow for a bit... 74,000 new STD's per year!
