Iris Weinshall
Weinshall—or Mrs. Chuck Schumer—is the former head of the New York City Department of Transportation, and the current vice chancellor of the City University of New York.
Brooklyn native Weinshall attended Brooklyn College and her masters at NYU's Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. Soon after graduation she began working at numerous publicly-minded institutions with long names: the New York State Urban Development Corporation, Financial Services Corporation, and the Department of Citywide Administrative Services. In 1988 she began her eight year tenure as Deputy Commissioner for Management and Budget at the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and in 2000 she was tapped by Mayor Rudy Giuliani to become the Commissioner of the Department of Transportation. One of the few people that Mayor Bloomberg retained from the Giuliani administration, her prioritizes included reducing pedestrian injuries on Queens Boulevard, one of the most dangerous streets in the city, managing traffic flow throughout Brooklyn, and maintaining bridges on the East River. However, after seven years with the DOT she announced that she was stepping down in order to join the City University of New York. [Image via AP, with Chuck Schumer]
