If your SAT score sucked, you can blame Caperton. The former governor of West Virginia, was head of the College Board for over a decade until he retired in 2012.

Born in Charleston, West Virginia, Caperton attended the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and upon graduation managed a small family-owned insurance firm. Under his guidance, the firm became one of the largest privately-owned insurance firms in the nation, and it was on this platform that he ran for governor of West Virginia. A lifelong Democrat, he defeated Republican incumbent Arch A. Moore, Jr. in 1988. His administration cited education as one of its top priorities: therefore, it is no surprise, then, that Caperton would be a good fit for his next high profile position as President of the College Board. After a stint teaching at Harvard and founding the Institute on Education and Government at Columbia, Caperton joined the College Board in 1999, where he was perhaps best known for his massive overhaul of the SAT test in 2005. However, after over ten years with the company, Caperton stepped down in 2012. [Image via Getty]
