Matthew Day Jackson
Jackson is a trendy young sculptor who satirizes Americana.
Jackson had his first show at age 25 in Boulder, Colorado, fitting for someone who created a sculpture out of Birkenstocks. He's since become known for his work depicting familiar forms—like ships and flags—but constructed out of unexpected materials, like particleboard. His 2004 piece "Sepulcher" was a sculpture of a scaled-down Viking ship, whose sail was made of Jackson's own collection of punk band t-shirts. He cheerfully called it "a monument to my own death at the age of 30." Jackson's first show—which the Times' Roberta Smith called a "bracing solo debut"—took place in 2005 at Perry Rubenstein's gallery, which still represents his work. His sculptures have also been seen at the Museum of Modern Art in Oslo, the Royal College of Art in London, P.S. 1's "Greater New York" show in 2005, the 2006 Whitney Biennial, and Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
