McCain's War on Media Begins in Earnest
Finally, it's come to this: McCain is pulling out of an interview with professional softballer Larry King, because King's CNN peer Campbell Brown accidentally asked McCain proxy Tucker Bounds some tough questions about Sarah Palin's readiness to be commander in chief. (As we said before! The media forgives everything besides violating your own narrative!) This will teach Larry to keep everyone else at the network in line! Here are some of the many many lies John McCain's increasingly whiny campaign is accusing the liberal media of spreading: First of all, every single word of today's Elisabeth Bumiller story on Sarah Palin. All of it is FICTION, they say! Like that thing about how she was a member of that secessionist party because she attended their conference and her husband was a member of their party until be became an "independent" in the '90s? That is false because Palin has been a registered Republican since 1984. More:
The AP quotes Steve Schmidt saying the campaign was prepared to send a "jump team" to the home state of whoever was selected for the second spot. But Bumiller has her own version: "A Republican with ties to the campaign said the team assigned to vet Ms. Palin in Alaska had not arrived there until Thursday, a day before Mr. McCain stunned the political world with his vice-presidential choice." A Republican with ties to the campaign? How about a Republican on the campaign? It's not as though the leadership of this campaign was unwilling or unable to talk to the New York Times, in fact, they were already on the record answering these questions.
Can you even spot the contradiction there? It's hard, because there isn't one. Hair-splitting! A campaign of whiners! Still, this shit does play well with people who hate and distrust the media—which, as the media tell us, is everyone in America. Now they want to maybe pull out of the debate moderated by Tom Brokaw, because Brokaw..... works for NBC? And McCain just doesn't like NBC. Do you think McCain misses the days when he just sat and bullshitted about hatting "gooks" with all his journalist buddies on his stupid bus? Because all his journalist buddies certainly do. MEANWHILE in Minneapolis and St Paul, a real "war on the media" is being waged as cops beat and arrest journalists for no fucking reason. Then they blame the hippies!
