In 1991, this must have been the standard for male beauty. Perhaps the emphasis on heavily muscled, long-haired dudes was a result of the insecurity women felt due to their decreased earning (hunting/gathering) power, because of the looming recession.
Mere months after the fall of the Soviet Union, new opportunities were available for the Russian people—including the opportunity to be one of the "Guys of Glasnost."
