As Nas famously proclaimed, hip hop is dead. And last night, we found the murder weapon. Behold the Ford commercial from Wednesday's American Idol. It features your final nine American Idol hopefuls rapping. Not singing, mind you, but rapping.

Gaze in open-mawed horror as Run-DMC's "It's Tricky" gets utterly butchered. Feel your skin crawl as Jason Castro shows off his mad dribbling skillz. Mourn for your departed soul as Kristy Lee Cook swats the ball away from a charging black man.

It ain't pretty, to be sure. But if Ford is actually committed to taking the Idol contestants down this road, may we suggest that next week they cover Akinyele's classic "Put It In Your Mouth"? That might be enough to make us buy a Focus.

So—people are just now figuring out hip-hop is utterly bankrupt? Punk was NEVER pimped out and commercialized the way hip hop and rap has been the last few years. Its only been the last couple of years that I've started hearing Iggy Pop, Ramones & Buzzcock tunes slapped on ads for cruise lines, cell phones & automobiles, and that's only because they're now considered safely "retro" or, more likely, the larger consumer public doesn't know who the fuck they are/were because they were too busy consuming mass quantities of Duran/Duran, Madonna, Van Halen & Michael Jackson.

It's awesomely hysterical. They pimp these kids out in awe inspiring ways wek after week.

For a great blogsite about this Season's AI go to blogspot and do a search for AISeason7. The thing's brilliant.

It skewers each week's show yet somehow you can tell the blogger is way more into it than they should be based on his/her remarks.

C'mon now, "It's Tricky" is far from sacred. Had they done "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" or "Straight Outta Compton" it would be a different story, but Run DMC is fair game at this point.
