DEEPEST SOHO, NEW YORK — I'm at the offices of TheLadders, a sort of Monster.com for six-figure-salary types, and this tech consultant won't stop bending my ear. "I just went to a Lunch 2.0 in the Valley last week," he says. TheLadders is throwing a Lunch 2.0 event, a sort of recruiting-fest and schmoozathon that's lurched its way from the Valley to New York City. How'd he like the first Lunch 2.0 in New York? "Oh, you know New York. Everyone's all hotty toddy." No, I don't know. A hot toddy, last I checked, is a mixed drink served hot. It's not an attitude. You want an attitude? Tell a bunch of New Yorkers they're hoity toity.

TheLadders.com put on a free spread because they're looking for new hires. A pair from HR told me the company's grown its headcount 110 percent in 2007 and looks to grow at least another 85 percent in 2008. And somehow it's going to find desk space for all those people in SoHo? Don't worry, I'm sure those yuppies didn't really need those lofts.

And what are all those bodies going to be doing? One product manager, a new hire himself, told me the company is considering adding social networking features. Here's a suggestion: Save some of the budget for fancier food. Come on. If you can print napkins with your logo on them, you can spring for something more than Chinese eggrolls.
