Google Bitches Day: Celebrating "victims" of the world's biggest search company
Fortune Small Business's latest issue centers on "how to thrive in this strange new world" where "Google can make or break you." Yawn, yet another Google trend issue. What is it, really? Looks like it's a chance for small business owners to bitch about their failures.
Google Bitch #1: The Clueless Retailer
Our first featured whiner, entrepreneur Allan Keiter, tells the sad story of losing a high Google search rank.
In the months after he fell prey to the Google dance, Keiter saw his revenues plunge some 20%. When he contacted Google for an explanation he was simply told that the algorithm was secret sauce. "There was nothing I could do," he says. "They make changes in their ivory tower, and it ripples through to the little guy."
Let's step back a bit. Allan built an online business. A good chunk of his profit came from free traffic through Google. Had Allan watched where his business's money came from, maybe he'd have learned about Google's methods before they wiped out his revenue. Then he could have optimized his site for Google instead of crying about ivory towers to a spinoff magazine.
