Gawker in 2003 is what the Drudge Report was in 1997. All it needs now is its own Monica Lewinsky. Produced by British journalist-turned-entrepreneur Nick Denton and Alabama native Elizabeth Spiers, it's a daily distillation of New York City gossip. Current obsessions include "downwardly mobile i-bankers," "real estate porn," "no-ropes social climbing" and "Hamptons gauche." The site launched in December 2002 and in four months has already caught the attention of columnists at The New York Post and New York's Daily News. Among Denton's marketing techniques: He bought sponsored text links on Google connected to names of famous media and real estate personalities. Search for Vanity Fair Editor Graydon Carter and a link to Gawker comes up to the right of the screen. Cost: about $50.
