World's Most Brutal Tweenage Metal Band Gets $1.8 Million Record Deal
Every once in a while, the internet gets it shit together and actually does something worthwhile for the world. This week presents one such an occasion, with the news that the brutal pre-teen metal band Unlocking the Truth landed a $1.8 million record deal from Sony.
The Brooklyn band hit the public consciousness in 2013 after a fan-uploaded video of them playing a breakdown-heavy tune in Times Square went viral, and went on to play Coachella this year. Drummer Jarad Dawkins is 12 years old; guitarist Malcolm Brickhouse and bassist Alec Atkins are both 13.
The New York Post reports on their big contract:
"I'm so excited! We've made it!" gushed 12-year-old drummer Jarad Dawkins, of Crown Heights.
"We were discovered on YouTube," Dawkins continued, shouting over the noise at a Camden, NJ stadium where the boys were scheduled to perform Friday night.
"After that we started getting calls and performing more and as we performed we got bigger and bigger," the preteen said.
Major labels, however, can be predatory, and as the Post notes, Unlocking the Truth's deal presents some hurdles: they'll receive 16 to 17 percent royalties on sales, but must sell at least 250,000 copies — no small feat — before they get the full $1.8 million (they'll get $60,000 before any albums are released). The New York Daily News reports the contract locks the band in for two albums on Sony, with an option for up to four more.
