Fantastic movie. I'm amazed at Woody Allen's prowess this late in his career. It's not normal. Oscars for Allen and Blanchett.
Woody Allen is a funny man. One time he encouraged a New York cabbie to drive to the Met post-haste, and to hell with the safety of those around him! The driver heeded his advice and recklessly blasted through the busy streets. Woody, unbuckled in the back, slid left and right and left and right until they arrived at his destination. Sweat drenched, he leaned close to the cabbie's divider and blurted "Leggo my Ego". This was intended as a Freudian witticism but missed the mark by a fair margin. This story is worth retelling when you are waiting in line with your lover about to buy tickets to Blue Jasmine. They will find it inconsequential and you will find their indifference très amusant.
Cate Blanchett is superb in this movie and I hope there is an Oscar headed her way. If I did not live in San Francisco I probably would have thought Blue Jasmine was a great film, but unfortunately I could not get past how unbelievable the characters were for the city. Has Allen spent more than 10 minutes with people from San Francisco? The actor's clothes, the dialogue, the loud in your face conversations are decidedly not SF. A daytime party with people in sports coats and ties? Ha! And seeing a person talking to herself on the street is like seeing a pigeon. If we took a moment to stop and stare we'd never get anywhere. We just try to avoid contact and move along.
Man, I'd think any film about IChing references, schmaltzy Jewish humor, and crass vulgarity would be a massive hit. Allen's formula has been so secure now for some 50 friggin' years, any news about a Woody Allen film is well, a Woody Allen film (insert last previous Press releases about his films here)
