Woman Steals Car, Unintentionally Levels a Building
A woman on the run from police ended up taking an entire building down with her when she allegedly stole a car and led cops on a chase through downtown Kansas City last week.
The chase began when a cop saw the woman—who has not been named—speed through a stop sign in a stolen SUV at around 80 mph.
A witness told the AP that the woman was talking on a cell phone and overshot a corner, losing control of the vehicle. After hitting a hydrant, she slammed into an unoccupied two-story brick building that had been storing now-permanently unrestored vintage cars, causing a partial implosion.
"It sounded like a bomb," the witness said. "If it could shake the ground, it would have. It was like slow motion."
The building's owner said said only a few dozen vintage cars were hurt in the demolition derby, and although the woman was hospitalized, her injuries were reportedly "not life-threatening."
Engineers are attempting to restore the building, which dates back to the 1920s and was once a Ford dealership, the Kansas City Star reports.
