Woman Mows Down Dozens of Las Vegas Pedestrians "Like a Bowling Ball"
Police in Las Vegas say a woman driving a minivan with a three-year-old inside intentionally mowed down dozens of pedestrians Sunday night, killing at least one person.
The woman, said to be in her 20s, drove a 1996 Oldsmobile onto the South Las Vegas Boulevard sidewalk “two or possibly three times.”
Police say she ran over dozens of people, drove away, and veered into another crowd of pedestrians before fleeing the scene. Witnesses tell the New York Times she was traveling at around 30 to 40 miles per hour when she hit the first victims.
“The car was like a bowling ball and the human bodies were like pins,” witness Rabia Qureshi told Reuters.
“The car rolled right in front of me. By the time I looked over to the right, all you could see was [her] driving away and people were bouncing off the front of the car, you can hear it,” another witness, Antonio Nassar, told CNN affiliate KLAS. “The windshield is smashed at this point. She rode the sidewalk, she came to a stop at the Paris intersection, people are punching into the window ... she accelerated again and just kept mowing people down.”
At least 36 people in all were injured, and at least one person died from the impact. A Las Vegas police spokesman tells the Washington Post officers determined the crash was intentional based on a review of surveillance footage and witness statements.
Police caught up to the woman near the Tuscany Hotel, not far from the crime scene and arrested her. The three-year-old in the car was reportedly uninjured.
