At least two people were killed and one was injured today during anti-terror raids in eastern Belgium, according to the BBC.

A third person was wounded in the raid in the town of Verviers, according to Belgian TV. Several arrests have been made.

Witnesses reported hearing heavy gunfire for several minutes and at least three explosions.

Unconfirmed reports said raids were also taking place in Brussels and elsewhere in Belgium.

The Telegraph, citing police sources, reports that the three men in Verviers had been under police surveillance since recently returning from Syria, and the AFP quoted an official as saying the raid was "jihadist-related."

At a press conference after the raid, a spokesman for the federal prosecutor's office said the suspects had "imminent" plans to carry out attacks and had opened fire on police. No police or witnesses were injured in the raid, according to the spokesman.
