A family of five, driving in their SUV, crashed into a lake in suburban Phoenix early on Sunday. Two children and their parents are dead. A third child is in critical condition.

According to Tempe police spokesman Michael Pooley, four bystanders saw the silver SUV go into Tempe Town Lake around midnight, and two jumped into the water to try to pull the passengers from the car. Emergency rescuers arrived around 12:15 a.m.

Officers first pulled two children from the car—a 6-month old girl and a 2-year-old boy—before removing the 27-year-old father and 25-year-old mother. “Our guys did as much CPR as they could until they were transported to the hospital,” Pooley said. The parents and 6-month old died at the hospital. The 2-year-old, initially declared dead, is in critical condition.

The Arizona Republic identified the victims as 27-year-old Glenn Edward Baxter, his wife, Danica, 25, and two of their children, 2-year-old son Nazyiah and 1-year-old daughter Zariyah:

During the initial investigation, police dentified Danica Baxter and discovered her 3-year-old son, Reighn, was unaccounted for. Just before 9 a.m., divers discovered the 3-year-old still strapped to his car seat in the back row of the submerged vehicle, in what police described as a “horrible” scene.

The Maricopa County Office of the Medical examiner will conduct an autopsy and toxicology tests on Baxter’s body, Pooley said.
