On Sunday, the New York Times reports, 28-year-old Serge Duthely hanged himself while in police custody. This is the third time someone has hanged himself in an NYPD holding cell since May.

After he was arrested in Canarsie on Sunday afternoon on a drunk-driving charge, police said, Duthely was taken to the NYPD’s Intoxicated Driver Testing Unit, at the 78th Precinct station house, in Park Slope. He was subsequently taken back to the 69th Precinct station house, in Canarsie.

Police said he was found “unconscious and unresponsive inside the cell area” at 5:30 that evening. He had hanged himself using his T-shirt. He died after being taken to Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in cardiac arrest.

Two other men have hanged themselves in police custody in the past eight months. From the Times:

On May 27, a 53-year-old robbery suspect hanged himself with a shirt in a holding cell at the 121st Precinct station house on Staten Island, the police said.

Then, on Nov. 11, the police said a 49-year-old robbery suspect hanged himself in a holding cell at the 49th Precinct station house in the Bronx, in a case that led to a sergeant’s being placed on modified assignment.

No officers or supervisors have yet been disciplined in Duthely’s death, police said Monday.
