It's kinda ghoulish, but yes, I got that sense too.
Not blaming nor absolving the news outlets: natural disasters - especially massively destructive ones - are click-bait.
Anyway, Haiyan's still strong and now headed for Da Nang. So they might still get their "Oh, the humanity!" scoop.
Honest question: when you say "worse", what would qualify it as such? I have a few ideas, which is still screwed up to think about, but it's more screwed up to think that news outlets wouldn't give this a serious look without some extra depressing facts.

Christ, sometimes I like to troll right-wing sites just to get a laugh at the idiots who post there, but then I come here and realize it's just the same human trash that comment.
I know it's one thing to expect people to care about massive loss of lives that's not directly connected to them, but is it really that unreasonable to expect that we don't use it as an opportunity to out-pun each other.

The first three comments on this post were horrid. Some people, who were clearly unaffected by this event, decided to take the time to leave comments insulting the people of the Philippines, and for what? To get a few laughs from other equally insensitive people? I hope you feel great about yourself. 1200 PEOPLE DEAD AND COUNTING.

So you don't understand the main purpose of this site? Poor taste will always occur, pretty much everywhere, and cannot be eliminated from the world. People have different ways of dealing with the negative. It's difficult to empathetic 24/7, especially in the face of global news which contains constantly horrible things.

As someone who has read Gawker for years and years, I don't think the purpose of this site is to poke fun at the world's tragedies. It sounds like you understand the severity of this disaster, so stop making excuses for those who do not.
Then maybe those people should stay away from news blogs. If people are gonna have their heads up their asses then I wish they wouldn't pull 'em out just to make an idiotic, unfunny comment.
