The French are less than enthusiastic about many things—Kanye West, body fat, and expressing enthusiasm chief among them—but one thing they’re absolutely not going to go along with is sitting down for dinner with the Iranians for an alcohol-free meal.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is visiting Europe this week and he’s set to meet with French President François Hollande next Tuesday. It’s the first official Eurotrip for Rouhani, and an important meeting for the two countries, which reportedly butted heads during negotiations for the Iran nuclear deal.

But according to reports, there’s a big issue in scheduling, and it’s drenched in sulfites.

The Iranians, according to France’s RTL Radio, insisted on a wine-free meal with halal meat — a request based on Islamic codes that amounted to culinary sacrilege in France, a nation that puts the secular ideals of the Republic above all else.

The French, RTL said, counter offered with a presumably alcohol-free breakfast — which the Iranians promptly rejected because it appeared too “cheap.”

The two are now reportedly set to have some sort of sober “face-to-face chat” next week. As they say, à chacun son goût, which I believe is French for “I’m being rude to you right now.”
