The big Paris Climate Discussion Meeting thing has wrapped up, with much optimism about the 195-nation agreement to deal with climate change. However: we did not get the one thing we really need.

1. A carbon tax, which would put a real price on the carbon emissions that are causing climate change, is the mechanism that has the best hope of slowing down carbon emissions in the drastic way that we need.

2. People of all ideologies on all sides of the climate issue—from hardcore environmentalists to hardcore Wall Street types to economists government officials on all sides of the political spectrum to fucking oil companies themselves. agree that we need a carbon tax.

3. Going into the Paris talks, all of the sane people agreed that we need a carbon tax.

4. We did not get a carbon tax, due to [LONG SCREED ABOUT MADDENING POLITICAL INDIFFERENCE TO CLEAR FUTURE RISKS].

5. James Hansen, the former NASA scientist who essentially alerted the public to the dangers of climate change, says that the Paris talks were “a fraud,” “a fake,” and “bullshit,” since they did not succeed in putting a tax on carbon emissions.

6. The case for burning fossil fuels remains economically persuasive, so we will continue to burn fossil fuels.

There is one United States presidential candidate who supports a carbon tax, but he kind of looks like Larry David, so he should not be considered a “serious” candidate.
