Teen Who Saved Cop's Life While Handcuffed to Receive Award From Police
A teenager will be honored by Ft. Lauderdale police for saving the life of the officer who had just arrested him.
Last September, Officer Franklin Foulks collapsed as he was processing 17-year-old Jamal Rutledge on criminal mischief and burglary charges at the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. Rutledge, who was handcuffed, quickly shouted for help and kicked the security fence, drawing the attention of other officers (Skip ahead to 37:58 in the video).
Sergeant Todd Bunin heard Rutledge's cries for help and upon seeing Foulks clenching his chest, notified police dispatch to send help.
Two other officers, Robert Norvis and Raymond Ketchmark, overheard Bunin's radio transmissions and immediately responded to assist. Norvis removed Foulks' police gear and cut off his shirt. Meanwhile, Ketchmark used a nearby Automated External Defibrillator to stimulate Foulks' heart.
Paramedics eventually arrived and transported Foulks to a nearby hospital, where doctors credited the teen's quick response with saving the officer's life. Foulk
Rutledge and three police officers will be commended for their heroics at a ceremony next Wednesday.
