Nicolas Sarkozy, the former president of France, was charged by prosecutors Wednesday "with corruption and influence peddling in a criminal investigation," the AFP reports. Sarkozy was detained earlier today by anti-corruption police and questioned for 15 hours.

Making couple friends seems like a social headache. There are many chances for things to backfire. Each person has to like, or at least tolerate, three other people. It's much more complicated than a forming one-on-one friendship, for sure. But, the payoff seems like a fun assurance of double-dates for always, so it's easy to understand the effort on the part of Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni to woo over their desired couple friends, the Obamas.

A judicial investigation has been opened against former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, after allegations that he received illegal funding from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi for his 2007 campaign. Sarkozy met Gaddafi in Paris in 2007 and has long denied wrongdoing.

Page Six reported Wednesday that America's weird young spinster aunt Mary-Kate Olsen, 25, is now dating Oliver (né Olivier) Sarkozy, 42, the half-brother of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. According to the Post, the two were spotted in the Hamptons over Memorial Day weekend (presumably together, or this ain't much of a story), and have been dating for about a month.

Just in case you feared the giant swell in her belly was a tumor, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has finally confirmed her pregnancy. The French first lady and anal play enthusiast says she doesn't know the gender, and did not specify how many months along she is. Tabloids speculate her fetus is a week or two shy of six months. I'm not sure how they reached such a specific date, but suspect it had something to do with a hacked cellphone hidden under a mattress. Unless Nicolas Sarkozy's sympathy bump gave it away. Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi is pretty pissed off that his friend and Mayor of Milan, Letizia Moratti lost in the first round of elections to a candidate from the left. So he did what any racist European leader would do when faced with a decline in popularity: he turned on minorities in his country. Berlusconi wrote this on his website:

Barack Obama and his regal wife Michelle are not on the invite list for Prince William's wedding next year. The royal says he wants to invite "ordinary citizens." French president Nicolas Sarkozy will get invited, however. Ordinary indeed!

French President Nicolas Sarkozy doesn't think much of allegations that he helped fund a political campaign with kickbacks from a Pakistani arms deal. During an off-the-record briefing with journalists, he went nuts, calling them "pedophiles." Unsurprisingly, this didn't stay off-the-record.

Reader Charles sent us this screenshot of the Twitter account of France's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was hacked but still managed to convey President Nicolas Sarkozy's feelings toward the Roma he's busy deporting.

After the European Union justice commissioner called France's deportations of Roma a "disgrace," France's Europe minister Pierre Lellouche got pissy: "You don't address yourself like that to a great state such as France, which is the mother of human rights."

Looking for a popularity boost, unpopular xenophobic French President Nicolas Sarkozy continued his expulsion of Roma, with another 283 deported from France today. Sarkozy's interior minister said Roma "delinquency" had risen 138 percent last year. Meanwhile, everyone hates Sarkozy.
