Why Didn't the Boston Globe Sell to the Highest Bidder?
Hamilton Nolan · 08/05/13 03:40PMThis weekend, The New York Times Co. sold the Boston Globe to John W. Henry, the owner of the Boston Red Sox. Henry paid $70 million. (Or negative $40 million, by more realistic calculations.) Oddly, several other bidders made higher bids than Henry. Why did the NYT Co. leave that money on the table?

Middle-Aged Guy Doesn't Like Twitter
Hamilton Nolan · 07/16/13 08:11AMA coveted job writing for the New York Times op-ed page is considered one of the most exclusive gigs in journalism. And with good reason: the unparalleled intellect and experience of their columnists are simply without equal. Where else will you find some middle-aged dad with the wit and bravery necessary to proclaim: hey, I don't care for this "Twitter" thing?
The Washington Post Is a Bitter, Jealous Little Newspaper
Hamilton Nolan · 07/02/13 09:53AMThe Washington Post, the pre-Politico newsletter of choice for The Political Establishment, has the worst opinion section in America. Today, they once again prove why: the paper, which helped to break the NSA Prism spying story, editorializes that the U.S. government must stop Edward Snowden from leaking any more of that awful news.

Hamilton Nolan · 06/12/13 09:37AMThomas Friedman's Still Writing About His Daughter's College Roommate
Hamilton Nolan · 06/10/13 08:19AMLast week, mustache-stroking corporatist sloganeer Thomas Friedman used his immensely valuable column space in the New York Times to write a love letter to a company run by his daughter's college roommate. Could Thomas Friedman possibly top that for sheer laziness and nepotistic indulgence? But of course.

If the Koch Brothers Want to Pay Too Much for Newspapers, Let Them
Hamilton Nolan · 05/09/13 01:58PMEvil corporatist archconservative billionaires the Koch brothers are considering making a bid to buy several big newspapers from the Tribune Co., including the LA Times and the Chicago Tribune. Unions and liberal politicians are justifiably alarmed by this prospect. They're trying to pressure the shareholders not to sell to the Kochs. Here's another, perhaps more productive idea: let the Kochs buy that crap.

Newspaper Memo Demands Staff Stop Wrecking Bathrooms Amid Layoffs
Cord Jefferson · 05/03/13 07:34PMThere have been some tough times recently at the Daily Gazette newspaper in Schenectady, New York. Not only did the family-owned enterprise's management cut 10 staffers in layoffs this week, including five from the newsroom, there have also been some troubles with the bathrooms not functioning properly. But, as a tipster writes, the first problem may have helped precipitate the second:
Publisher Sells Pulitzer-Winning Paper's Headquarters To Be Mean
Ken Layne · 04/30/13 12:51PMLife as a newspaper journalist is a crushing series of indignities ending only with your final layoff from the last print newsroom within a hundred miles of your (foreclosed) condo. For California's Pulitzer-winning daily the Press-Enterprise, today's comically tragic news is that the paper's headquarters is being sold off for $30 million, with the remaining employees destined to be shuffled over to some leased office space in Riverside.

Hamilton Nolan · 03/27/13 09:04AMThe 20 Best Trollings in Modern History
Hamilton Nolan · 03/25/13 04:00PMFrom the Spanish-American War all the way up to the 40 Hottest Women in Tech, the past century has borne witness to some epic trolling, bro. This amoral art form—loosely defined as "the media fucking with you on purpose"—has defined our modern era of outrage. It is time that we honored the very best trollings of the past 115 years.
Henry Blodget Found a Newspaper
Hamilton Nolan · 03/22/13 12:27PMHenry Blodget, a full grown adult who's held a highly compensated job in finance and founded a multimillion-dollar media company, still retains his ability to be astounded by the little things in life. Like airplanes: what is it like to ride in one? Or women: are they too lazy to get good jobs? Or Jews: why do people hate them so much? Today, Henry Blodget, who has retained the wonderful ability to see the world through a child's eyes (which so many of his cynical peers have lost), has found something outside of his hotel room door. But what??
Barney Frank Was Never Sorry for Threatening to Blow Up Your Car
Camille Dodero · 03/19/13 06:40PMFormer Representative Barney Frank is not known for saying polite things to make people feel better. He will not "pretend everything in wonderful" when it is not. He will cause a scene when Fire Island ferry employees refuse his senior discount. He will not indulge an inquiry into his emotional state after getting passed over for John Kerry's open Senate seat, instead retorting, "If I wanted to talk about feelings, I would have called Oprah."
Please Enjoy This Hilariously Racist Iowa Newspaper Story
Hamilton Nolan · 03/15/13 08:58AMWhen you think "The Montezuma (Iowa) Record," you think "just good journalism, as befitting the town that is home to Iowa's best competition motocross race track, Fun Valley Motocross." I'm sad, and chuckling, to tell you that you may be disappointed in the Record's latest effort, however. (Unless you are racist).
