The Two Faces of Laurel

Jesse · 06/15/05 05:07PM

Apparently bored by hosting cocktail parties for unemployed freelancers, mediabistro.com doyenne Laurel Touby has promoted herself to hosting lunch hours for overcompensated media executives. At least, that's what it seemed like this afternoon, when we treated ourselves to celebratory salads at Michael's and Touby made a beeline to our table, to "welcome" us to the restaurant.

Paper Feels Your Pain

mgross · 04/28/05 02:51PM

Paper Magazine wants a new Production Manager who is "energetic, detail-oriented, a multi-tasker, able to effectively manage time under pressure, deadline-oriented (a ball-buster able to crack whips when necessary to meet schedule), a problem-solver, trouble-shooter, resourceful, flexible, and a team player" At the bottom of the ad, they add, "Salary starts mid-40s commiserate with experience."[sic] Nice to know they feel the pain of anyone trying to live in New York on $40,000 a year.—MG

Christmas in the Receiving Department

Andrew · 12/29/04 11:05AM

In a seasonal tale of the publishing industry's propensity to give and receive (mainly the latter), Mary Lisa Gavenas, an ex-beauty editor of such rags as Glamour and InStyle among others, reveals all the free loot she got from publicists in a confessional diary style. Beauty editors reel in the most fish, though not always the priciest ones, and it's warming to hear a story where magazine staffers willingly chain themselves to their desks lest they miss a goodie to the wandering hands of piss-broke assistants.

Media Vows

Haber · 12/08/04 11:55AM

Like we said this morning, we've got wedding fever. We tried to apply a cold compress, but it's still raging! We hear the deafening sound of bells: Wedding bells, silly!

Michael Wolff interview

Gawker · 04/08/03 03:59PM

MediaBistro interviews New York magazine's media critic (although he'd prefer not to be called that) Michael Wolff and gets media critiqued:
MB: And how did that come to be? Were you old friends with [New York editor-in-chief] Caroline Miller? I mean, how did that opportunity arise?
MW: No, I wasn t. I had never met her before. You don t know anything about me, do you?
MB: It's a Q&A. I'm trying to let you talk about this stuff.
MW: These are terrible questions. You can t just ask someone, give me your resume.
