The College Journalist's Dilemma: Hated by the Cool Kids

Hamilton Nolan · 03/03/11 10:34AM

When you're a kid, spreading the details of the misdeeds of others far and wide gets you branded a snitch and ruins your social life. But when you grow up, doing the same thing gets you branded a "journalist," and gets you invited to boring parties! So you can see the dilemma faced by the "college journalist:" old enough to be a reporter, young enough to still be hated by everyone, for snitching.

Can We Talk About How Creepy the Charlie Sheen Hype Is?

Maureen O'Connor · 03/02/11 04:02PM

900,000 people (myself included) are following Charlie Sheen's brand new Twitter account, which he created in the midst of a manic media blitz that caused him to lose his job. His craziness earned him a restraining order (from the ex-wife he went to jail for beating and threatening with a knife, who says he threatened to murder her this time), and caused state authorities to remove his children from his custody. Among the evidence presented in the custody battle: A text message announcing he "must execute" a "stoopid Jew pig."

Hamilton Nolan · 03/02/11 03:22PM

In your Wednesday media column: Bill Keller's debut column, the NYT paywall approaches, NewsBeast shows staffers the new Newsweek, NPR listeners are unbearable, and Jeanne Moos wants a gold watch, goddamn it.

Frank Rich Leaving NYT for New York Magazine

Hamilton Nolan · 03/01/11 09:57AM

Huh. New York Times op-ed expounder Frank Rich, who currently possesses a huge chunk of the Sunday opinion page in the world's most influential newspaper—where he's allowed to say whatever he wants—is leaving all that behind to go write for New York magazine, where he "will be an essayist for the magazine, writing monthly on politics and culture, and will serve as an editor-at-large, editing a special monthly section anchored by his essay." Rich's own explanation:

All Books Must Now Appeal to Cracker Barrel Patrons

Hamilton Nolan · 02/28/11 01:02PM

Now that Borders is dying, book publishers are collectively asking themselves, "Huh, where do we sell all these stupid books, now?" I mean Barnes & Noble is okay and all, but it's gonna take more shelf space than that to show off all those fancy attractive book covers designed to make people forget they could be buying this copy much cheaper used, on Ebay. The solution? Placing books in every kind of store, anywhere, that sells anything at all.

Lazy Hack of the Day: Cal Thomas

Hamilton Nolan · 02/25/11 12:07PM

Cal Thomas is a syndicated columnist whose default philosophy is a mix of "Cranky old white male extreme conservative" and "a little too religious for comfort." He also has a disturbing face!

TBD.com Gutted: Making Money on News Is Hard

Hamilton Nolan · 02/23/11 02:55PM

In your tragic Wednesday media column: TBD is eviscerated, a new WaPo ombudsman, media tweet beef, a bunch of HuffPo millionaires, Harper's Magazine is a case study of woe, and Fox News is your most valuable cable network without balls.

Kill The Honorifics

Hamilton Nolan · 02/22/11 02:44PM

The Wall Street Journal is ending the use of honorifics in its sports pages. Meaning that they will no longer say things like "Mr. Griffin then dunked on Mr. Mozgov, balls dangling harshly on Mr. Mozgov's chin." No more "Mr." or "Mrs." in the sports pages! In other words, they will write like human beings talk.

Fox Reporter Attacked in Dangerous IHOP Parking Lot

Hamilton Nolan · 02/21/11 03:48PM

A reporter and a cameraperson from a California FOX affiliate were attacked and beaten when they tried to question a group of people who had gathered in a Sacramento IHOP parking lot to mourn the shooting death of a 27 year-old man in the same parking lot yesterday. The whole thing was caught on tape! Watching it is a good way to make yourself feel dirty without being able to quite put your finger on why. [Fox40]
