Hundreds of manatees, the Andrew W.K.s of the sea, turned up at a Florida hot spring this week in such great numbers that the water had to be closed to humans for more than a day while they got their mellow, listless sea cow party on.

Who hates manatees? Sea cows, mermaids, whatever you want to call them—these massive, slow, people-loving warm-water swimmers are naturally adorable and devoid of natural enemies. But hundreds have died already this year, and deregulating Florida lawmakers could doom the rest today.

Authorities in St. Lucie County, Florida, arrested a man earlier this week after he posted photos on Facebook showing him manhandling a manatee calf he spotted in Taylor Creek.

A woman in St. Petersburg, Florida was arrested yesterday after the local sheriff's department published photos of her riding a manatee in nearby Tampa Bay. The woman, identified as Ana Gloria Garcia Gutierrez, has been charged with violating the Florida Marine Sanctuary Act, which seeks to "protect and preserve living and other resources of the Florida Keys marine environment."

This woman will know, once she gets arrested.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is in the process of writing rules to protect manatees, the fat monsters who occasionally get lost and dominate media coverage for weeks, from boating and other "activities" that constantly kill them in Kings Bay, Florida. So, is the local Tea Party chapter okay with this? Ha ha, no, not at all.
