On the evening of May 13, Mother's Day, a Canadian woman named Dana Dirr was hit head-on while driving to the Saskatchewan hospital where she worked as a trauma surgeon. She was 35 weeks pregnant, but determined to work until the moment she gave birth. The morning after the crash, her husband John ("J.S.") Dirr posted a note on Warrior Eli, a Facebook page the Dirrs had created to document their 5-year-old son Eli's battle with cancer: "Last night at 12:02am I lost the love of my life," J.S. wrote. "I lost my wife, the mother of my children, and my best friend." Miraculously, Dana had held on in the hospital just long enough to have her baby—a daughter, and the Dirr's eleventh child.

What's worse than a story about how a group of children were fined $500 by Montgomery County for operating a lemonade stand without a permit outside the site of this weekend's US Open? How about the fact that they were going to donate their proceeds to a pediatric cancer-fighting charity? Don't worry, though, because all the middle-aged men charging $50 to park on their lawns are doing just fine. [via WUSA]

Mean Oregon health officials shut down 7-year-old Julie Murphy's lemonade stand because it wasn't up to code. But now the county's top official has apologized: ''A lemonade stand is a classic, iconic American kid thing to do," he said. [AP]

Though she was using hand sanitizer, 7-year-old Julie Murphy's art fair lemonade stand was shut down because it didn't have the necessary restaurant license. People were outraged and anarchists (srsly) are planning a protest. Stay strong, government agents!

Some little girls have recently been caught spitting on capitalism, by giving away lemonade from their sidewalk stand. For free! Where's the respect for suggested retail pricing? Fortunately, financial columnist Terry Savage drove by these children and yelled at them.

The Way We Live Now: Counting the many things we can't afford. We can't afford plastic bag taxes. We can't afford lemonade stand licenses. We can't afford our own crayfish. And why should we? This is America or whatever!
