Did you know that using solitary confinement in juvenile incarceration facilities is a terrible idea because it can cause permanent psychological damage? Even if not, good news: today, Ohio and the federal Department of Justice agreed that the state would no longer put kids "in seclusion," as the euphemism goes.

A new ACLU report estimates that more than 17,000 juveniles in America have been held in solitary confinement, and concludes, unequivocally, "Solitary confinement and isolation are not safe for children."

Private juvenile jails in Britain use a guide called Physical Control in Care for handling troublemakers: "Drive fingers into groin," or "alternate elbow strikes to the young person's ribs," or "drive straight fingers into the young person's face." Ouch. [Observer]

A guard at an upstate New York juvenile detention center says that a dance there last December turned into an orgy involving a prostitute and a 15-year-old girl, who allegedly gave lap dances and blow jobs to inmates.
