Writer Margolick Quits 'Vanity Fair' For 'Portfolio'

Maggie · 01/18/08 05:14PM

Magazine shakeup! Longtime Vanity Fair contributing editor David Margolick is leaving the Condé Nast magazine to join Portfolio (as Howell Raines did earlier this week), the Observer is reporting. Margolick most recently penned a well-received profile of Eliot Spitzer for the magazine. Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter is known for his rotating list of favorites-could Margolick have been on the outs? We would wish him better luck with his new capitán, Portfolio editor Joanne Lipman, but we're not sure he's headed for friendlier pastures. One thing's for sure, Portfolio must be putting serious coin on the table to convince players like Margolick to come on board. If you know, let us know.

Where Did Condé Nast's 'New Media' Exec Run Off To?

Maggie · 01/17/08 04:38PM

We're hearing that Condé Nast Media Group senior vice president Amy Churgin, who was in charge of new media, left the publishing company in a bit of a hurry last week. She's bounced around there a bit this year, spending just seven weeks last winter as the publisher of the group's Gourmet after a seven-year stint at Architectural Digest. Know anything else? Let us know.

NY1 Local Reporter Rockets Up To CNN As Nat'l Correspondent

Maggie · 01/17/08 10:51AM

Local girl Friday makes the big-time! NY1 political reporter and NYU grad Sandra Endo, who if we do say so ourselves, is completely adorable, has just been hired by CNN as a national correspondent. Endo just capped a decade at the local news-loop-that-could, covering our representatives' legislative (and personal) affairs. We like her for saying this to Columbia Journalism Review when asked about concierge services offered to the press during the 2004 Republican National Convention: "While it's thoughtful and ingenious for the host committee to be so considerate, I laughed at the thought of me being able to get my nails done in the middle of the convention. I think I would be fired first if I had that much down time!" Attaway. Press release, with all the usual congratulatory buzzphrases, after the jump.

Former 'Time' Exec. Relieves Venerable Editor Mayhew At Simon & Schuster

Maggie · 01/17/08 10:02AM

Former Time deputy managing editor Priscilla Painton has been named editor-in-chief of Simon & Schuster's adult trade imprint, which is far more respectable than it sounds. Painton, who left Time in December, will take over most of the responsibilities of flinty (and legendary) editorial director, Alice Mayhew, who's staying on at the publishing house in a somewhat diminished capacity. Mayhew shepherded, among others, books by Craig Unger, Bob Woodward, Doris Kearns Goodwin. Painton, daughter of one of the founders of Time Europe, spent 20 years at the news weekly, earning the respect of many. She was known for making wry fun of former managing editor Jim Kelly to his face (when warranted) during weekly staff editorial meetings, and remains the highest-ranking female editor in the magazine's history.
