Matthew Muller, the prime suspect in a California kidnapping that’s become known as the “Gone Girl” case because police initially believed the victim faked the crime, agreed to tell a reporter a few things “off the record” in a jailhouse interview. One of those things was apparently that he did it, Wired’s Kevin Poulsen reports.

Back in March, a 29-year-old Vallejo, Calif., woman disappeared from her home, and her boyfriend was left tied up and drugged with a note demanding a ransom for her return. Suspicion initially fell on the boyfriend, but when the victim returned two days later and refused to cooperate with investigators, authorities thought she may have staged the whole thing, a la Gone Girl. Which brings us up to this week, when a real suspect has been charged with the “hoax” kidnapping.

Vallejo, Ca., police had ruled the kidnapping and ransoming of 29-year-old Denise Huskins last week an "orchestrated event" by the woman and her boyfriend in a supposed Gone Girl-style fakeout. But now people claiming to be her captors have emailed detailed messages to California news outlets demanding credit for the supposed crime and that Huskins' good name be cleared.

Further spurring rumors I whispered to myself on the subway last week about how Rob Kardashian actually spent the last year chained to an elliptical machine in a basement somewhere in Calabasas, the forgotten son finally resurfaced Sunday with what appears to be a sincere plea for help.

If a movie is not going to show us something new, it should at least show us something different. I've been trying to dislike Gone Girl ever since Mary Gaitskill wrote her hatchet job of a review in Bookforum last September.
