Three weeks after U.S. District Judge Robert Shelby struck down Utah's ban on gay marriage, the Supreme Court has temporarily reinstated the law. The Tenth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will now review Shelby's decision and issue a ruling by February 25.

The Utah attorney general is requesting an emergency stay to block same-sex marriages in the state pending an appeal of a ruling that Utah's gay-marriage ban is unconstitutional. "I am very disappointed an activist federal judge is attempting to override the will of the people of Utah," said Governor Gary Herbert.

A federal judge just struck down Utah's ban on same-sex marriage. "The state's current laws deny its gay and lesbian citizens their fundamental right to marry and, in so doing, demean the dignity of these same-sex couples for no rational reason," U.S. District Court Judge Robert J. Shelby wrote.

The Hawaii State Senate passed a bill on Tuesday legalizing same-sex marriage and The Associated Press was quick to highlight the vote's cultural significance: "Hawaii Senate passes gay marriage, clearing islands to become a same-sex wedding destination."

The Illinois House just passed a bill legalizing same-sex marriage. The bill now heads to the Senate, which already passed the measure, for a technical change to its effective date. Governor Pat Quinn has pledged to sign the bill into law, thus making Illinois the 15th state (including D.C.) to recognize gay marriage.

Former President George H.W. Bush served as an official witness at a same-sex wedding in Kennebunkport, Maine this weekend. The former president’s spokesman, Jim McGrath, confirmed Bush and his wife Barbara attended the nuptials of Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen: “They were private citizens attending a private ceremony for two friends.”

Gay MSNBC host Thomas Roberts revealed today that a pair of powerful GOP leaders just swooned over his engagement and marriage to Patrick Abner. Reince Priebus and Sean Spicer, the chairman and chief spokesman of the Republican National Committee, cheerfully congratulated Roberts in 2011 and 2012, just as the GOP cheerfully touted its aversion to gay people.
