Roger Federer's Monogram Revolution

Andrew Belonsky · 08/31/09 03:28AM

Because everything Roger Federer does deserves press, the NY Times has run an astonishingly long piece on his super-stylish RF monogram. Where did it come from? What does it mean?! It means he's into himself. And you should be, too!

The Olsens Get Respect; The Other Side of André

• When you first heard the Olsen twins were breaking into fashion, you had a good laugh, didn't you? Well, it's been a few years since then and now "their success in a field as competitive as fashion is impossible to deny," says an enthusiastic Cathy Horyn today. Of course, it hasn't hurt that they're super-famous and worth a gazillion dollars either. [NYT]
• Things you didn't know about Vogue's André Leon Talley: He's partial to Juice Couture shorts at home, loves Uggs ("it's a cozy shoe"), and says The Golden Girls is his fave show on TV. [TONY]

'Styled For Action'

Hamilton Nolan · 08/27/09 02:05PM

Was there really a time when these could be found "At better selected stores. About $9.00"? Or was it all a dream? "Your sign is on my balls, baby," we imagine him saying. Click to enlarge. [Copyranter]

Fashion's Night Out: The Commercial

cityfile · 08/26/09 10:40AM

Because the fashion industry really, really wants you start shopping again, it's pulling out all the stops for Fashion's Night Out, the hyped-up retail pep rally scheduled for September 10. The latest PR offensive: A TV commercial featuring Sarah Jessica Parker, Anna Wintour, Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Isaac Mizrahi, Diddy, Tory Burch, Lazaro Hernandez, Ashley Olsen, and a whole bunch of others—all jam-packed into a spot that's less than a minute long. If you watch the commercial—and you can do so above—make sure you're paying attention at the 0:30 mark. It's not every day that you get to see Anna Wintour come off as a giddy schoolgirl.

Jimmy Choos and Ziplock Bags Don't Go Together

These are difficult economic times, sure. And keeping up appearances isn't easy, especially if you follow the advice of some experts who argue that you need to look even better than usual during a financial downturn. But you can only cut costs and stoop so far, you know? If you insist on buying really expensive heels even when you can't afford them, but you then wrap your feet in plastic bags so you can return the shoes in a few weeks, you probably should just do your shoe shopping at Payless and call it a day. Really. We'll forgive you. [HuffPo]

Jason Preston Is Not Looking Forward to the Weekend

cityfile · 08/21/09 09:14AM

Marc Jacobs is reportedly tying the knot this weekend in Provincetown to fiancé Lorenzo Martone. One person who is none too excited by the prospect that Jacobs is finally settling down: Jason Preston, Jacobs' "rent boy" ex-boyfriend, who was once so devoted to the designer, he had his logo tattooed to his forearm. We're not sure commiserating on Twitter with Courtney Love, of all people, is going to provide Preston much relief from his relationship blues—she's got issues of her own to worry about—but if you have a moment today and want to send him a tweet of encouragement (or maybe hire him to "host a party or event"), feel free to reach out. Ryan Tate · 08/20/09 09:15PM

There's something admirable about this disturbingly awesome invention for the heartland, these Winkers™ pants: the fatter you get, the better they work. All of America, from coast to chubby coast, will soon need this clever thing, no?

The September Issue Makes Its Debut

cityfile · 08/20/09 07:03PM

• The September Issue debuted at the Museum of Modern Art on Wednesday night and the fashion set turned out en masse, not surprisingly. Just a few bits from the big event: Anna Wintour couldn't stop talking up Fashion's Night Out; Thakoon gushed that Anna is now "bigger than Madonna"; the film's unlikely star, Grace Coddington, emphasized that she really never wanted to take part in it; everyone ignored Tom Florio; Diddy claimed Anna as his fashion "godmother"; and Marc Jacobs, who insisted on putting on a French accent when speaking to reporters, argued that contrary to what most people think, Anna's really very "maternal and caring."
• Speaking of Jacobs, rumor has it his wedding to Lorenzo Martone will go down this weekend in Provincetown. And his big Fashion Week after-party, which was canceled last year, will return this fall.

• In news that will be of precious little value to you, Rachel Zoe's QVC collection is hitting Fashion Week this year; Kenny Chesney is launching a line of clothing; and some company is under the impression the public wants a collection of Desperate Housewives-inspired perfumes.
