Trump's Lawyers Argue That Univision Should Have Known He Was a Horrible Racist Xenophobe

Brendan O'Connor · 02/11/16 12:25AM

Last summer, Donald Trump filed a $500 million lawsuit against Univision for breach of contract and defamation after the network dumped the Miss Universe pageant (of which Trump was, at the time, a part owner) following the racist unveiling of his presidential campaign. Univision wants the suit dismissed, arguing that Trump’s comments constituted a “cataclysmic” event that voided the contract, the New York Daily News reports. Trump’s lawyers, however, have argued that the remarks were “foreseeable”—that is to say, Univision knew what they were getting.

James Woods Sues Twitter Troll for Calling Him "Cocaine Addict"

Jay Hathaway · 07/30/15 12:50PM

Movie villain James Woods filed a $10 million defamation suit Wednesday against a Twitter user who called him “a cocaine addict,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. The probably-pseudonymous Twitter user, “Abe List,” made the crack July 15 in response to an asinine Woods tweet that called Caitlyn Jenner “Bruce” and hyped up the bogus Planned Parenthood “baby parts” scandal in one foul breath.

Gabrielle Bluestone · 01/06/15 08:28PM

Unexpectedly, something funny in the Jeffrey Epstein-sex-with-minors case: after threatening to sue everyone involved for defamation, high-powered attorney Alan Dershowitz now finds himself the defendant in a defamation suit brought by the plaintiff's lawyers.

Hilarious Yelp Review Helps Cement Precedent of Not Taking Internet Seriously

Max Rivlin-Nadler · 02/23/13 03:25PM

"Diana Z.," a former tenant of a building owned by Beal Properties in Chicago, did not have a pleasant experience while living in their building. She was charged late fees on her rent, even though she had documentation saying she paid it on time, and was treated rudely by their customer service representative. Flustered and without much recourse, she did what many frustrated consumers do, and vented through a scathing review on Yelp. She wrote:

Coffee Shop's Stupid Lawsuit Against the New York Times Tossed

Lauri Apple · 08/13/11 01:28PM

A judge has thrown out a defamation lawsuit filed by "Brooklyn-born and bred" coffee shop Gorilla Coffee against the New York Times—upholding the paper's right to report on mean things that people say about each other during disputes. Kind of an important part of a newspaper's job, if you think about it.

E-Trade Compiles Bible of Lindsay Lohan Scandals

Max Read · 05/10/10 07:53PM

Remind us not to get in a fight with E-Trade: The company is responding to a defamation suit from Lindsay Lohan with a hundred-page document "detailing Lohan's drug abuse, brawls and DWI busts," just to prove she lives in California.

Stop Defaming Sam Zell's Trailer Park Company!

Pareene · 04/17/08 01:49PM

Sam Zell, the crazy old man who bought some newspapers recently, is a champion of free speech, which is why he swears so much. So it's odd that he is suing some lady for defamation, right? Especially because the lady is not associated with us, and we have called him all sorts of things! Oh, the lady is Dianne Jacob, who represents the Second District on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. Sam Zell also owns a trailer park company that has four parks in her district. Recently, they started raising rents. Dianne Jacob said some very mildly defamatory things about them!

Horace Mann School Sued For "Smear Campaign" Against Fired Teacher

Sheila · 11/07/07 01:52PM

Andrew Trees—the teacher fired from Riverdale's tony Horace Mann School in January and the author of Academy X, a novel satirizing life inside an elite private school very much like Horace Mann!— filed suit today in Bronx County's New York State Supreme Court. He charges the school with breach of contract and defamation. Trees has been awful quiet since his firing—now we know why!

Thomas v. Page, the libel case brought by the Illinois Supreme Court Justice against a columnist for the Kane County Chronicle, has after four years of wrangling been settled to the tune of $3-million, down from the $7-million award a jury granted the judge. Bill Page, the local columnist who apparently defamed the judge, says "I don't apologize for anything, and I stand by what I wrote." [Kane County Chronicle]

Understanding The 'Boston Herald' Libel Case

choire · 05/08/07 05:29PM

Yesterday, a Massachusetts court upheld a $2-million defamation award against the Boston Herald and some of its reporters, including David Wedge. Because we don't know anything about anything, we called in David Lat, the fine (yet deliciously shallow!) legal mind behind Above the Law, to tell us what this means for newspapers and bloggers who don't like getting sued—and what it means for those who do so enjoy suing.
