This Michael Jackson Tribute From the “Thriller” Girl Is Insane

Rich Juzwiak · 07/13/13 01:00PM

I think this is art, but in the words of its singer, I'm so confused. Ola Ray starred with Michael Jackson in the "Thriller" video 30 years ago. In the time since, she appeared in bit parts on shows whose titles were punctuated with exclamation marks like Gimme a Break! and What's Happening Now!, had her drug arrest profiled on A Current Affair and successfully sued Jackson's estate for royalties. Jackson died over four years ago, and Ray has just gotten around to paying tribute to him. The project would be an ignorable clinging to past glory were it not utterly unhinged.

A Diva Takes Her Time

Multi-genre dance producer Diplo's typically loose lips have suggested that Beyoncé has scrapped work she's done on her upcoming album, the creation of which she's been talking about forever (or at least, since January). "Fuckin' thing sucks!" is how I like to imagine King Bey regarding this rejected body of work, but the truth is that she's probably just nodding and grinning serenely about it.

Fruitvale Station: How Another Unarmed Black Man Got Shot

Rich Juzwiak · 07/12/13 03:18PM

In the early morning hours of New Year's Day 2009, a 22-year-old unarmed black man named Oscar Grant was shot by a Bay Area Rapid Transit Police Department police officer in Oakland's Fruitvale train station. Dozens of people witnessed this and several of them recorded the incident on their cell phones. Footage uploaded to YouTube went viral almost immediately. Johannes Mehserle, the officer who shot and killed Grant, was eventually convicted of involuntary manslaughter, sentenced to two years in jail and served less than a year's worth of time.

‘Nate Was Vindication of Everything’: A Q&A with Writer Adelle Waldman

Maggie Lange · 07/10/13 12:34PM

Adelle Waldman originally set out to write a response to all the novels about young literary men coming to New York. For her, there always seemed to be a key element missing from the romantic relationships in these books; The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P. and its central character directly addresses the complications of love affairs that are so often glossed over.

Kanye West To Whomever Leaked The “Black Skinhead” Video: FUK YOU!

Rich Juzwiak · 07/09/13 04:35PM

Once prolific tweeter Kanye West has again taken to Twitter to vaguely explain yesterday's "Black Skinhead" video debacle. The video, which appeared not on his own official site as we initially reported but a site run by his label group Universal Music, he says was unfinished and prematurely leaked. To whomever is responsible, West tweeted "FUK YOU!" That person doesn't even deserve a full "FUCK," that's how low he or she is.

Kanye West Shows His Giant Sims Dick in Pulled “Black Skinhead” Video

Rich Juzwiak · 07/08/13 06:43PM

Earlier today, Kanye West posted the official video for the Yeezus single "Black Skinhead" on his official site. [Update: MTV News points out that the site on which the video was posted is actually a Universal Music Group "development" page.] It features a CGI Kanye dancing to song's Gary Glitter-esque shuffle. It's bad. Really bad. It looks kind of like The Sims or maybe an interstitial from Tekken 2. It's definitely not polished enough for Just Dance. "This is that goon shit / Fuck up your whole afternoon shit," snarls Kanye, but this video wouldn't even fuck up your brunch.

Adorable Old Lady Who Rode the Subway With Jay-Z Reviews His Album

Ellen Grossman, the visual artist who shot to virality when she appeared in Jay-Z's Where I'm From doc late last year, was enlisted by MTV News to share her thoughts on Magna Carta Holy Grail. While reviews of the $5 million data-mining operation have been mixed-to-positive, Grossman has nothing but generous words for it. Even though she has trouble with her hearing, she seems to like what she can hear, and besides, what's really important is that Jay-Z is trying. Says Grossman:

Just Like Walter White: All the Breaking Bad Copycats

Maggie Lange · 07/05/13 10:04AM

Breaking Bad begins when a high school chemistry teacher finds out that he has a fatal form of cancer and decides to manufacture and sell high-grade meth in order to provide for his family after he passes away. It's about mortality, power, violence, and the insidious methamphetamine market. As it happens, all of these themes are actual real-life themes in actual real-life America.

Cowboys and Idiots

Rich Juzwiak · 07/03/13 09:55AM

In Gore Verbinski’s two-and-a-half-hour period-blockbuster take on The Lone Ranger, a layer of dust covers everything. The seconds trickle by slowly like sweat on a brow beaten by the deluding sun. Everything is ugly and uncomfortable. The main antagonist, with grime caked on his fuzzy face, appears and reappears during one of multiple runaway train scenes and start shooting and beating and heisting. I never catch his name.

Lou Reed Has Accepted Yeezus as His Lord and Savior

Rich Juzwiak · 07/02/13 10:19AM

Just when you thought that everyone and their Hamptons spouse had weighed in on Kanye West's sixth solo album, Yeezus, along comes rock god Lou Reed to gush about the "majestic and inspiring," minimal/maximal, "manic depressive" work from the "really, really, really" talented West.
