Taylor Berman · 05/16/13 06:57PM

Virginia Maiden had an unusual Tuesday, to say the least. She awoke that morning to find that her 1995 Toyota 4-Runner had been stolen. “She was so confused, didn’t know what was going on, it was just gone,” a co-worker would later tell the press. So Maiden hitched a ride to McDonald's, where she worked the drive-thru window. At some point that day she spotted something in the drive-thru line that shocked her: a 1995 Toyota 4-Runner.

(Update) Kai, the Internet's Hero Hitchhiker, Now Wanted for Murder

Cord Jefferson · 05/16/13 12:06PM

You might remember Kai, Pauly Shore's Encino Man character come to life, from earlier this year when he helped save a Fresno woman who was being attacked by a violent racist. Kai's chill-bro demeanor and quick thinking in the face of danger—he beat the crazed man down with hatchet blows to his head—briefly made him the internet's new favorite meme. But was the drifter hero everyone was celebrating also a deadly maniac himself?

Akein Scott, a 19-year-old New Orleans man, was arrested last night as a suspect in the Mother's Day shooting of 19 people. Scott's apprehension seems to be receiving somewhat less attention than that of other purveyors of terror.

National Review writer Kevin Williamson has an interesting post up at The Corner right now. The post describes his trip to the theater Wednesday night, which was disrupted by a woman next to him who kept using her phone throughout the performance. He asked her several times to stop, and she refused, telling Williamson to mind his own business. So Williamson did what any petulant child or criminal would do: he grabbed the phone from her hands and threw it across the room.

Three people—a 75-year-old man and two women, aged 66 and 54—have been arrested and charged with running a drug and prostitution ring out of a senior citizens' housing complex in Englewood, New Jersey. (Were you guessing Florida? Good guess, but not this time.)

The Pentagon announced Tuesday night that an Army sergeant in charge of sexual assault prevention at Ft. Hood is under investigation for sexual assault. The investigation, according to Pentagon officials and a Capitol Hill staffer who spoke to USA Today, focuses on accusations that the soldier forced a subordinate into a prostitution ring and sexually assaulted two others.

Oh No, Drug Counselors Might Have Criminal Records

Hamilton Nolan · 05/14/13 09:58AM

If there's one thing that the State of California wants in a drug and alcohol counselor, it's a spotless past free of crime. So the state was appalled to learn that felons may be counseling people about drugs. Do we want to live in a society that legalizes speaking from experience?

Terrorism and the Public Imagination

Hamilton Nolan · 05/13/13 10:39AM

The shooting of nineteen innocent people, including two children, at a Mother's Day celebration in New Orleans yesterday was an act of violence only gaudy enough to hold the nation's attention momentarily. Shortly after the bodies were cleared, the FBI said they "have no indication the shooting was an act of terrorism. 'It’s strictly an act of street violence in New Orleans.'" At that, we were free to let our attention drift. In America, all villainy is not created equal.
