The Have and the Have-Nots

cityfile · 10/06/09 08:13AM

Executives at Wall Street firms that did not receive bailout funds from Washington (or have since paid it back) seem to be expecting to do fine this year: According to a poll by eFinancialCareers.com, "more than a third of Wall Street finance professionals surveyed expect their bonuses to increase for 2009." Those who work at Citigroup or Bank of America won't be as lucky, clearly. In what the Wall Street Journal describes as the most "intrusive" move into corporate compensation (but which others might just call "pretty reasonable"), pay czar Ken Feinberg revealed today plans to "clamp down on compensation at firms receiving large sums of government aid by cutting annual cash salaries" and shifting a chunk of it into company stock. The Letterman Drama Continues; Heidi's New Identity

cityfile · 10/06/09 06:09AM

• The Letterman mess rolls on. The Late Show host issued another apology on his show last night, describing how the scandal has impacted his wife, Regina Lasko ("She's been horribly hurt by my behavior"), and kindly pointing out that he's not having sex with any of his current staffers. Meanwhile, Stephanie Birkitt, the woman at the center of the "scandal," supposedly wrote in her diary that she was dating alleged extortionist Robert "Joe" Halderman and sleeping with Letterman as recently as last fall, leading Halderman to flip out when he read her diary in December. [NYP, NYDN]
• So are Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem engaged? While Cruz's rep went with "no comment," Bardem's flack said, "I really don't know, but would not be able to say anything even if I did." That sounds like a "yes" to us! [People]
• Celebrity chef Todd English skipped out of his wedding at the last minute this past weekend. His jilted bride went ahead with the party anyway, while English headed to South Beach to hit the bars and clubs. Classy. [P6]
Heidi Klum has filed documents to change her name to "Heidi Samuel," since that's Seal's last name. Please update your address book accordingly. [TMZ]

The Apologies Go On

cityfile · 10/05/09 03:55PM

Were you hoping to see the David Letterman saga subside this week so we could all turn our attention to, say, more serious public sex scandals such as one that quite possibly involved breaking the law? It doesn't look like that's going to be happening. Following another day of over-the-top coverage (including a series of interviews by Gerald Shargel, the lawyer defending alleged extortionist Joe Halderman, Letterman will once again address the scandal on his show tonight and apologize to his wife and staff. NYC Taxis Are Made of Gold

cityfile · 10/05/09 02:04PM

Looks like you should have cashed out your 401K years ago and invested all your money in the taxi industry. While "investing in stocks has been a road to nowhere all decade," the "value of a city taxi medallion has jumped 179 percent this decade," which means it's managed to outperform "just about every asset save for gold." Astor Jury Possibly Deadlocked

cityfile · 10/05/09 01:38PM

The jury in the Brooke Astor case has been deliberating for nearly three weeks now—and the trial itself went on for 19 weeks—but it's looking increasingly likely that the trial will end without a resolution. Jurors sent two notes to the judge today indicating they've been struggling to come up with a verdict, although the judge instructed them to "hang in there a bit longer" and go back to deliberating. Jared & Ivanka Sell Out

cityfile · 10/05/09 01:03PM

Over the weekend, the New York Times thoroughly dissected the three wedding registries set up by Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, who plan to tie the knot at the end of the month at the Trump golf course in Bedminster, NJ. The attention sure seems to have paid off: All the unsold items at Crate & Barrel and Tiffany mentioned in the article have since been spoken for. But it also looks like the couple wasn't especially thrilled to have their drinking glass and serving spoon preferences revealed to all. You'll need to obtain a password from Jared or Ivanka to view their Williams-Sonoma registry from now on. [NYT, previously]

Marc Jacobs' Reality TV Show: Not Happening, Alas

cityfile · 10/05/09 12:27PM

Remember those reports last week that Marc Jacobs had decided to appear on a gay version of Real Housewives on Logo called Kept? The rumor got off the ground, it seems, when the Daily News noticed an item about the show on Gawker alongside a photo of Jacobs and boyfriend Lorenzo Martone. Despite the fact the piece didn't actually suggest Jacobs was involved in the show in any way, the mere presence of a photo of Jacobs on the same page as a story about a gay reality TV show led the Daily News to publish an item a couple of days later that the designer had "reportedly signed on to participate." Naturally, the story was soon picked up by dozens of gossip outlets as if it were a done deal. Too bad the News didn't bother to call anyone to check (or even reread the story on Gawker). Much to the dismay of many—gay and straight alike—we can confirm that Marc will not be on the show.

Pity the Poor Rich

cityfile · 10/05/09 10:32AM

Don't feel badly for your friend who's been out of work for months. Or the one who got laid off recently. Clearly, they're no match for this investment banker who's taking home a $1 million bonus this year, but has realized he'll have absolutely nothing left after accounting for his mortgage, Hamptons rental, private school tuition, ballet and fencing lessons for the kids, housekeeper, babysitters, gym memberships, and three psychotherapists (one for him, one for his wife, and a couples therapist). "Where am I going to move? Brooklyn?" God forbid! [HuffPo]

Letterman's Loss Is Paul Shaffer's Gain

cityfile · 10/05/09 10:08AM

The last few days haven't been easy ones for David Letterman, naturally. Ironically, though, the scandal may end up benefiting Letterman's right-hand man, Paul Shaffer. The Late Show's longtime band leader's new memoir, We'll Be Here For the Rest of Our Lives: A Swingin' Show-biz Saga, officially goes on sale tomorrow. And while the "candid" book that takes readers "behind-the-scenes" doesn't contain any revealing info about Letterman—or address any of his dalliances with junior staffers—the book is selling briskly and has secured the No. 1 spot in Amazon's TV category. Marc Dreier's Last Days of Semi-Freedom

cityfile · 10/05/09 08:46AM

If you haven't had time to read the lengthy story about disgraced lawyer Marc Dreier in the new issue of Vanity Fair, you can check out the Dreier interview that aired on 60 Minutes last night. The segment doesn't reveal much new info on Dreier, who is now behind bars for defrauding investors out of $400 million. But you will get to see the lonely lawyer pad around the apartment where he was under house arrest this spring and where he didn't have much to do all day but munch on cereal, read the newspaper, and watch TV. "Do you have any friends?" asks Steve Kroft. "It doesn't seem so." [CBS]
