Prison time for Naomi?

cityfile · 06/20/08 06:03AM
  • Naomi Campbell pleaded guilty today to all six counts in connection with her assault on a police officer at Heathrow back in April. A sentencing date hasn't been set, but she's looking at a maximum six-month prison sentence and a $10,000 fine. We bet garbage duty in New York's looking a whole lot better now. [Daily Telegraph]

For Really?

cityfile · 06/20/08 06:02AM

Derek Jeter was just voted the "most overrated player in baseball" in a Sports Illustrated poll of 495 major leaguers. "I ain't talking about that," Jeter said when asked for comment. Maybe he'll talk about his grammar instead? [NYP]

Tinsley's Loss Is Our Gain

cityfile · 06/20/08 05:57AM

Sad news for fans of vapid socialites: Tinsley Mortimer's MTV series isn't going to see the light of day! A source tells the Post, "They couldn't use any of it. It's collecting dust. She looked good but she just got dressed and went to parties every day and didn't have anything interesting to say. It was incredibly boring. The project is dead." Could this be a bad omen for the other social-heavy reality shows in development, like 10021, which is (supposedly) set to star such C-list scenesters as Kristian Laliberte, Devorah Rose, and Annabel Vartanian? Not really. Tinz has already managed to milk her social fame for all the usual perks: She's landed the heir husband, the handbag line, and the advertisement campaigns from New York to Tokyo and back. And she's got a bit more to lose if a tragically embarrassing show makes it on the air. People like Laliberte? Not so much.

Rachael Ray Finds a Home in the Hamptons

cityfile · 06/19/08 02:21PM

More than six months after she first went into contract on a Southampton home, Rachael Ray and her husband John Cusimano have finally closed on the $2.9 million property. For their money (or Rachael's money, anyway) the couple is getting a three-bedroom European-style villa, bordered by two golf courses. (Southampton and Shinnecock, in case you were wondering.) The 6.2-acre property also features a heated pool, ponds, and a two-bedroom guest house. Take a look around after the jump.

Welcome, Carl

cityfile · 06/19/08 02:17PM

After a slight delay—138 days, give or take—Carl Icahn debuted his blog today, the Icahn Report. The legendary corporate raider plans to use the site to address issues of corporate governance. (And, not surprisingly, the Times points out that most of his posts include words like "absurdity," "travesty" and "outrageous.") One added bonus: He's included his email address, carl@icahnreport.com. Do let us know if you email him and you hear anything back. [Icahn Report, Dealbook]

Mega Yachts (Still) Mega Popular With Mega Wealthy

cityfile · 06/19/08 02:10PM

The economy may be slumping, but things are looking up in the jumbo yacht industry. Orders for yachts over 130 feet in length are up, according to the Wall Street Journal, citing something called "Superyachting Index," which must be totally impartial since it's tabulated by a bunch of companies that sell and lease these floating monstrosities. But you know what the sad part is? The industry would be growing even faster were it not for the pesky fact that billionaires can't find enough crew members to staff their ridiculously large ships!

Why'd Ganzi Go? The Theories Abound

cityfile · 06/19/08 01:08PM

It's been a day since Victor Ganzi resigned as the CEO of Hearst. And still no one seems to be sure why he left exactly! The company released a vague statement which said the 18-year-vet departed because of his "irreconcilable policy differences with the Board of Trustees about the future direction of the company." But what really happened? Every media outlet seems to have a different account.

Kimora and Djimon Get Engaged. Kind Of

cityfile · 06/19/08 12:55PM

Kimora Lee Simmons and Djimon Hounsou are engaged. Well, kind of. Kimora says Djimon "kind of" gave her an engagement ring, whatever that means. Congrats, anyway, KLS: We're kind of excited for you! And we kind of can't wait for the kind of outrageously expensive wedding you've been dreaming up. And we bet Russell is happy for you, too. Kind of. [People]

J.P. Gutfreund: Not So 'Inocente'?

cityfile · 06/19/08 12:21PM

Tequila is the new vodka, haven't you heard? That's what J.P. Gutfreund—the 22-year-old son of John and Susan—is hoping at least. Notwithstanding the fact that marketers have been pushing just such an idea for a few years now, J.P.'s big business venture is a brand of tequila called Inocente, which Gutfreund and his backers at the Black Beverage Corporation have been busy promoting as the "other white liquor." J.P.'s been everywhere helping get out the message. He threw a party in the Hamptons with Brit singer Estelle, the Post "spotted" him "sipping" Inocente with Whitney Port in the Hamptons a few weekends ago (although J.P. probably wasn't too pleased to see his name misspelled). And the night before last, he hosted a tasting party, where he was photographed with a bevy of Upper East Side ladies (all tequila converts, we're guessing). The only problem with the marketing scheme?

Chuck Prince Is Still Looking for a Buyer

cityfile · 06/19/08 09:02AM
  • Chuck Prince is having a hard time selling his home in Greenwich. In the six months he's had the English-style mansion on the market, he's slashed the price by $300,000. The five-bedroom home on 2.4 acres (with wood-paneled library, exercise room, pool, sauna) can now be yours for $5.85 million. Prince shouldn't miss the manse much. The former Citigroup CEO and his wife Margaret spend most of their time at their expansive apartment at 550 Park Ave. [Bloomberg, Cleveland, Duble & Arnold]

And You Thought Living in Darfur Was Dangerous

cityfile · 06/19/08 08:41AM

Scary news for residents of the 10021: It seems muggings and robberies on the Upper East Side are up! (Well, at least according to people who live in the 'hood—the NYPD begs to differ.) But the news should give Tinsley and Fabiola a good excuse to carry Tasers around in their Birkin bags. [NY Sun]

The Poster Boys of the Credit Crisis

cityfile · 06/19/08 08:23AM

And there they go: Ralph Cioffi and Matthew Tannin, the former Bear Stearns hedge fund execs who now face charges of misleading investors, on their way to be fingerprinted before being transported to Brooklyn federal court. Our question: What do you wear when you know the six FBI agents on your doorstep are going to lead you through a gaunlet of reporters on your way to court? We're going to have to hand this one to Cioffi (left) who decided to go business-casual for the occasion. A much more effective way to convey the I'm-relaxed-because-I'm-innocent look, if you ask us.

Plastic Surgery: A Buyers Market

cityfile · 06/19/08 07:32AM

Been toying with the idea of a little surgical enhancement? Now's the time, apparently: Plastic surgeons are being hit by the recession, meaning that whereas a couple of years ago you'd have to wait months (or years) to get an appointment with a top scalpel artiste, now you can waltz right in—and presumably haggle on price, too! Dr. Sherrell Aston, however, denies being less busy than usual, but perhaps that's because his particular demo wouldn't dream of economizing on their nips and tucks, even though some of them would benefit from aging a little more, um, gracefully.

Charlotte Ronson Goes Mass Market

cityfile · 06/19/08 07:24AM

While her twin Samantha's busy with a full-time role as Lindsay Lohan's driver/purse carrier/lesbian life partner, brother Mark remains the most overpaid and overexposed DJ in history, and mom Ann relentlessly socializes and namedrops, fashion designer Charlotte Ronson—whose Urban Outfitters line, Play by C. Ronson, just hit stores—manages to be the the least insufferable member of her family (OK, so it's not difficult). [Nylon]

MTA Board Members Care About You

cityfile · 06/19/08 07:11AM

More controversy at the MTA! The vice chair of the transporation agency, David Mack—Long Island real estate magnate, demi-billionaire, brother of Bill Mackplans to challenge the agency's decision to take away his perks, namely the six E-ZPass tags that allow him to avoid paying for tolls or paying for the bus, subway or LIRR. In related MTA news, just in case you think that overseeing New York's hot, smelly subway system must be a lousy job, well, not so much. It turns out MTA chief Elliot Sander makes $350K a year and he worked out a bonus, too, even though the agency is talking about fare increases and service reductions.

Pat Field Says Ka-Ching

cityfile · 06/19/08 06:02AM

Pat Field is not only the busiest person in fashion, she obviously has no fear of cheapening her brand as she milks the SATC buzz for all it's worth. She's designing for Payless, dowdy British chain Marks and Spencer, online fashion store ASOS.com, and even Diet Coke, so it was probably inevitable that she'd ink a deal to sell a line on HSN, where she'll join other fashion A-listers like Suzanne Somers, Tina Knowles and Tori Spelling. No word on whether the flame-tressed sapphist will be on the small screen plugging her wares in person, but we're sure there'll be plenty of sub-Carrie items available at low, low prices!

Phantom Pain?

cityfile · 06/19/08 05:38AM

Did you hear about the Manhattan doctor accused of sexual harassment who fired back against his accusers, alleging they'd "corrupted" his good name by linking him to various porn sites? A judge threw out his claim that he had an "incurable Internet disease." Maybe that's because when you Google "Arden Kaisman," nothing really raunchy comes up? [NYP]

Hathaway's Breakup Saga Rages On

cityfile · 06/19/08 05:30AM
  • More dirt today about Anne Hathaway's breakup with Raffaello Follieri: She's living at the Gramercy Park Hotel while he's staying in a rental in Trump Tower. Evidence that this might be a PR stunt for her new movie: the exes may have met up for dinner at Cipriani last night. [Page Six]

Street Talk

cityfile · 06/19/08 05:17AM
  • Fallout from Morgan Stanley's disappointing quarter. To add to the mess, John Mack is now dealing with the discovery that a rogue trader lost $120 million. [NYP, WSJ]
