What Break Up?
cityfile · 08/07/08 09:12AMSamuel Israel: Drugs and Court Don't Mix
cityfile · 08/07/08 08:07AM
Disgraced hedge fund manager Samuel Israel III turned up to court yesterday to face new charges in connection with faking his own suicide last month. The judge didn't accept Israel's plea of guilty to bail jumping, though. When the bearded hedgie told the judge that he was being "weaned" off the painkiller fentanyl with methadone and rated his "clear-mindedness" at "about 70 percent," the judge postponed the matter until September 16. In the meantime, you can have a look at the criminal indictment below. [NYT]
Kim's Killer Birthday Bash
cityfile · 08/07/08 07:25AM
More trouble for Lil' Kim: The plasticized, pint-sized rapper—seen here at her 33rd birthday party last Sunday drinking some sort of blue substance out of a vial while clutching a glass of champagne in her other hand—now has the distinction of having had one of her guests end up dead. Police are still trying to put together what exactly happened to Ingrid Rivera, who was found bludgeoned to death on the club's rooftop. But we're assuming Kim will tell the whole truth if she's brought in for questioning, since she's already been arrested for perjury once.
Edgar Bronfman Jr. Sells in Amagansett
cityfile · 08/07/08 07:01AM
Edgar Bronfman Jr. has one less thing to worry about. The Post's Braden Keil reports today that the heir and Warner Music CEO has finally gone into contract to sell the Amagansett property that has been on and off the market since 2006. The three-acre estate, which Bronfman purchased for $12.5 million in 2005, includes a six-bedroom, 8,000-square-foot main house as well as a guest house and pool house. A sale price hasn't been disclosed (yet)—it was last on the market for $14.7 million—but you can take a look around at the property after the jump.
Bravo Is Recession-Proof
cityfile · 08/07/08 06:42AM
So that show on Bravo called Million Dollar Listing. It feels a little 2006, doesn't it? "Obviously, the market is different today," Andy Cohen, the network's senior veep of programming, tells the Times today. But Bravo, which is still reeling from the loss of the Harvey Weinstein-produced Project Runway, isn't giving in. They're holding firm, damn it! "The channel has bravely stuck with the name and the format instead of steering the show in a more topical direction, like Million Dollar Foreclosure." Oh, and Josh Flagg, one of the brokers on the show, was arrested last Thursday. And just days before the second season debuted, too. What a coincidence! [NYT]
Empire-Building with Graydon Carter
cityfile · 08/07/08 06:20AM
Graydon Carter is in expansion mode: The Vanity Fair editor is teaming up with hotelier Jeff Klein (City Club Hotel, Sunset Tower in LA) and restaurateur Jeremy King (Wolseley in London) to take over the Monkey Bar on East 54th Street. The three have been at it for some time. A year ago, the three had considered taking over the Oak Room at the Plaza, but ended up deciding against it. As did Monkey Bar owner Peter Glazier, who is now turning over the spot over to Carter, Klein, and King. [Page Six]

- Bill Brady, the co-chair of Credit Suisse's technology investment banking group, has sold his duplex penthouse at 744 Greenwich Street for $8.5 million. He paid $6.95 million for the apartment just last year, a mere three months before picking up a larger $15.5 million unit in Julian Schnabel's Village Palazzo Chupi. (Click through for more photos.) Cipriani Walks the Plank and Survives
cityfile · 08/06/08 02:04PM
The New York Post's Steve Cuozzo has never been much of a fan of Arrigo and Giuseppe Cipriani's restaurant empire—he once described Giuseppe as "Public Enemy No. 1"—but he stuck up for them this morning, railing against the Liquor Authority for threatening to yank the restaurateurs' precious license. Cuozzo argued that taking away their license would cost 1,000 employees their jobs and leave several iconic venues empty for the foreseeable future. His argument seemed reasonable enough. And apparently it was pretty convincing to the State Liquor Authority, too: They voted today to allow the Ciprianis to hold on to their license in exchange for paying a $500,000 fine. Commissioner Jeanique Green, who cast the group's deciding vote, said she made her decision out of concern for Cipriani employees. Sound familiar? Someone is going to enjoy (or suffer through) a complimentary dinner at the Cipriani venue of his choice in the near future!
The View from Actuarial Department
cityfile · 08/06/08 01:20PM
An Atlanta actuarial firm "which specializes in morbidity and mortality calculations" gives John McCain "a 'healthy expectancy' of 8.4 years, taking into account his four bouts with melanoma of the skin." As for Barack, he can "expect 21.9 years of good health—a forecast shortened by 10 percent or so by his history of cigarette smoking." (Oh, and as you probably suspect, this fave photo of right-wing bloggers isn't real.) [AJC]
God Divorces Wife No. 3
cityfile · 08/06/08 01:02PMSo Morgan Freeman. He got into a car accident a few days ago, as you may have heard. He's still recuperating from his injuries in the hospital. But he's also now divorcing his wife, too! A very efficient use of downtime and he'll get to be on painkillers during the legal negotiations. Clever! [NYDN]

cityfile · 08/06/08 11:22AM
What does Jason Pomeranc find sexy? Apparently silk ties, lubricant, condoms, and vibrators from Kiki de Montparnasse, at least judging by the "sensuality kit" he's tucked into the minibars at Thompson LES. At $195 the kit might seem a little pricey—especially considering it doesn't come with any furry handcuffs, which totally would have fit in with the theme—but it's a whole lot cheaper than hiring Ashley Dupre to entertain.
