Discretion is the New Black
cityfile · 04/30/09 08:48AM
It's official: Being rich is now an embarrassment, so instead of flaunting their wealth by peppering conversation with references to private planes and extravagant spending, the affluent are, increasingly, keeping their status on the down low, so as not "to be viewed as insensitive to hardship around them." Or at least that's the case according to a new survey, which found that only 29 percent of people with "lots of money"—discretionary income of between $100,000 and $5 million—wanted to be recognized as wealthy. Sure, it doesn't feel like 71 percent of rich people keep quiet about their money. But that may be because when the imaginary rich brag about all the things they have, it tends to drown out everything else.

Martone says it will probably happen in June, and will probably take place in Provincetown, although guests will have to cool their heels a bit before really celebrating. The party is planned for December in St. Barts. [FWD]
Masked, Swine Flu-Fearing Hotties, Part 1
cityfile · 04/30/09 07:55AM
As fear of the swine flu spreads around the world a whole lot faster than swine flu itself, photographers everywhere were suddenly handed an unexpected, new task: bringing us pictures of masked travelers. And who knew, it turns out there's something weirdly alluring—in a mysterious, behind-the-veil kind of way—about the humble white germ mask. Okay, maybe it's just us, but we've assembled a photo collection of masked, swine flu-fearing hotties anyway. The all-female edition is below. The male edition coming up shortly!

The Hotel Manager With Groupies
cityfile · 04/29/09 06:54PM
Real Househusband Simon van Kempen doesn't spend all of his time shopping for pink pants and planning off-season trips to St. Barts. He's also the general manager of the crummy Hotel Chandler in Murray Hill, of course. So who actually stays at the hotel that Simon claims has an occupancy rate of 96 percent since "conspicuous consumption is out of favor at the moment"? The usual suspects, like "screenwriters and actors taking advantage of discounts offered to folks in the entertainment industry," as well as die-hard Real Housewives fans, some of whom have "refused to check out until they get my autograph or photograph." And who could blame them? [Chicago Sun-Times]

Bernie's Birthday Behind Bars
cityfile · 04/29/09 03:17PM
Bernie Madoff celebrated his 71st birthday today, not that he had much of a chance to really celebrate per se. Ruth didn't stop by for a visit—she did pay a visit on Monday—and no cake with candles was provided at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. "We do not celebrate inmates' birthdays in any way," said an official when asked what was in store for Bernie on his special day. Of course, you're welcome to send him a belated birthday card if you feel like it. You'll find a card—which you can customize for the occasion—right here. [ABC News]

At least Mexicana is being honest! Expedia's Mexican travel section, however, could probably use an update given what's going on the world: "Nature has a way of re-energizing itself. And now, so do you. Book your escape and lift your spirits in Cancun." Of course, if by "re-energizing itself," Expedia is referring to a Malthusian crisis, then the ad copy is probably just fine the way it is:
Scared Yet?
cityfile · 04/29/09 12:40PMRahm Emanuel Brings the Sexy Back to DC
cityfile · 04/29/09 12:16PM
For reasons only the editors of People can explain, the magazine's new list of the "100 Most Beautiful" includes a section called "Barack's Beauties," which, in turn, includes "sexy" chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. Possible evidence to the contrary: A search for "Rahm Emanuel nude" on Google brings up precisely zero results. (Try it; we did!) But keep this up, People, and he'll be taking off the shirt along with the suit jacket soon enough. [Politico]
