Another Speidi Stunt, Seymour Scuffles in Greenwich
cityfile · 06/08/09 05:53AM
• It looks like Heidi and Spencer Pratt and NBC concocted yet another clever PR stunt over the weekend. Heidi was rushed from the set of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! to a hospital in Costa Rica for a stomach ulcer and later blamed NBC for "torturing" her. For its part, NBC is reminding the public they can see what really happened on an upcoming episode of the show. [NYDN, E!, TMZ]
• The police had to called to the Greenwich estate of Stephanie Seymour and Peter Brant on two occasions last Thursday after Seymour got into an altercation with Brant's bodyguards. [P6]
• Why did David Carradine end up dead in Bangkok hotel room? According to his family's lawyer, it may have been the work of a "secret sect of kung fu assassins" who "silenced" him because he was looking into "their shadowy activities." Or it could have been a case of autoerotic asphyxiation since according to his ex-wives he had a thing for being tied up. [NYP, NYDN]

One More Trader On the Run
cityfile · 06/05/09 01:56PM
Another rogue Wall Streeter is on the lam: "Ex-Credit Suisse trader and Bulgarian national Julian Tzolov was declared a fugitive by the U.S. government on Friday, three weeks before his trial for fraud related to subprime mortgages and auction rate securities. A document filed in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn said Tzolov, who was under house arrest and electronic monitoring, left his home on May 9 without permission of authorities."

Black Friday at the Observer
cityfile · 06/05/09 12:04PMA Greek Tragedy for the Peterson Family
cityfile · 06/05/09 11:29AM
Plenty of reality programs promise to show us how the rich and powerful live their lives. Very few actually end up doing that, of course. The women featured on the Real Housewives of NYC weren't part of the city's social elite before they humiliated themselves on national television—nor were they all housewives either—so they had little to lose in the end. That will change, though, when Bravo's NYC Prep, or the "real-life Gossip Girl," as Bravo has been billing it, debuts on June 23. One of the obnoxious, over-privileged teens featured on the show—the one who comes off in the worst possible light, in fact—hails from one of the city's richest and most respected families. Meet Peter Carey ("PC") Peterson, the grandson of Pete Peterson.

Are Vikram's Days Numbered?
cityfile · 06/05/09 09:34AM
This isn't shaping up to be a good day for Citigroup chief Vikram Pandit. Sheila Bair, the chair of the FDIC, is now looking to change up the bank's management team, per today's Wall Street Journal, and has even reached out someone else—Jerry Grundhofer, the former CEO of U.S. Bancorp—to "gauge his interest" in the top job. No word on how likely this scenario is. But if Vikram really unleashed an "obscenity-laced tirade about the FDIC chairman" last fall when Citigroup lost out in its bid to acquire Wachovia—as the Journal recounts—it's safe to say his neighbors got an earful this morning when he picked up the copy of the Journal on his doorstep. A Room with a View (of Diane von Furstenberg)
cityfile · 06/05/09 09:11AM
Most people were pretty pleased when Andre Balazs's Standard hotel opened in the meatpacking district late last year. One person who reportedly wasn't: designer Diane von Furstenberg, who, it's said, was a little miffed that hotel guests would now be able to look out of their windows and down into her glassy penthouse apartment atop the DVF store around the corner. Balazs downplayed any reports of tension. (They'd "share views of each other," the hotelier explained.) But we can now see why she may not have been so thrilled by her new neighbor. Judging by these hi-res photos taken by a random hotel guest who uploaded them to Flickr—and didn't know what he was taking pictures of—the view isn't half bad.
Embattled Exec Finds a Buyer On East 78th Street

• Frank Cassou—the general counsel and executive VP of NextWave Wireless who found himself in the hot seat when shares of the company plummeted and a wave of shareholder lawsuits followed—has gone into contract to sell his 18-foot-wide townhouse at 57 East 78th Street. The 4,600-square-foot manse, which he and his wife Gabrielle bought for $5.45 million in 2003, has been on the market for $15 million since February. [Cityfile, Sotheby's]
• A 2,890-square-foot penthouse at 285 Lafayette Street, which was acquired in 1999 by a trust in the names of Johnson & Johnson heirs Joyce Johnson and John Johnson III, has taken a $2 million haircut. The three-bedroom apartment, which is located next door to a larger penthouse that Ian Schrager is currently selling, is now priced at $10 million. [Cityfile, Real Deal, BHS]
Better Times Ahead?
cityfile · 06/05/09 07:23AM
Things haven't been this good since last fall! According to the U.S. Labor Department, employers "only" cut 325,000 jobs during the month of May, well below the 525,000 cuts that Wall Street analysts had been predicting and the smallest drop since September 2008. This is great news, sure—"the tide seems to be turning," says one economist—although it's not like these companies are actually hiring anyone yet. The unemployment rate climbed to 9.4 percent in May, the highest in more than 25 years. But if you're someone who has been desperately seeking a rationale for returning to the way things were before the downturn, consider this is your lucky day! [WSJ, AP]

Developer Bruce Ratner's plans to erect a $1 billion, Frank Gehry-designed Nets arena in the middle of Brooklyn isn't happening. Ratner is planning to move ahead with a new, cheaper design, one that will end up costing $200 million less. Don't expect to look as pretty, though: "Officials who have seen the design say that while it resembles Conseco Fieldhouse it also bears a likeness to an 'airplane hangar.' [NYT]
