Chris Brown Takes a Plea

cityfile · 06/22/09 02:03PM

Chris Brown accepted a plea deal in connection with his Rihanna beat-down back in February. In exchange for a plea of felony assault, Brown will serve five years of probation and will have to perform 180 days of community labor. "Brown also was ordered to stay at least 50 yards away from Rihanna—except at industry events, when it's 10 yards—despite a request from Rihanna's lawyer that the pair be allowed in the same place at the same time." Donny Deutsch's Big Ideas on the Economy, Weather

The 10th annual Love Heals charity event, which benefits the Alison Gertz Foundation for AIDS Education, took place on Saturday night. Originally scheduled for Luna Farm in Sagaponack, the event had to be moved to Polish Hall in Southampton due to the never-ending rain. But the downpour didn't stop fearless reporter Douglas Marshall from catching up with Donny Deutsch about both the gloomy weather and gloomy economy:

Marshall Takes Ill Once Again

Anthony Marshall, Brooke Astor's 85-year-old son who is currently on trial for looting his mother's estate—and who requires the use of a cane to get to and from the courtroom—had to leave court to see a doctor today after falling off his treadmill last night and hitting his head. That's not the only health issue he's dealing with: Marshall's wife, Charlene, confessed today that the reason he missed court a couple of weeks ago was because he suffered a small stroke. [NYDN]

Back at Work, Albeit a Little Worse For the Wear

cityfile · 06/22/09 11:28AM

Hillary Clinton broke her elbow last Wednesday at the State Department and underwent surgery on Friday. Today she canceled plans to travel to Italy and Greece for a series of meetings on Iran and the Middle East since she's still recovering from surgery. Clinton's injury, however, didn't stop her from putting on a brave face and appearing at the White House today for meetings with President Obama. Nor, it seems, did it stop the president's official photographer from snapping photos of the injured secretary of state and uploading them to Flickr either. [White House@Flickr, Washington Post]

Bob Jaffe Goes Down

cityfile · 06/22/09 10:48AM

A couple of weeks ago, we pointed out that Robert Jaffe, the car-collecting clotheshorse who raised hundreds of millions for Bernie Madoff, had returned to a life of leisure and was back hitting balls at the Palm Beach Country Club. He probably isn't golfing this afternoon—and that's not because there are reports of scattered thunderstorms in Palm Beach today. The SEC just filed civil fraud charges against Jaffe and two other executives affiliated with Cohmad Securities for marketing Madoff investments while "knowingly or recklessly disregarding facts indicating that Madoff was operating a fraud." The SEC also filed charges against Stanley Chais, who helped raise as much as $1 billion for Madoff from the Hollywood crowd, but has since left LA to move to NYC. [NYT/Dealbook, WSJ]

Miss Manners on Blackberries

cityfile · 06/22/09 09:41AM

To check your Blackberry or not to check your Blackberry? That is the question, apparently. Two weeks after the New York State Senate devolved into a high school farce in part because Majority Leader Malcolm Smith couldn't resist checking his email during a budget meeting with political power broker Tom Golisano, the Times tries to codify smart phone etiquette today. The verdict: Despite being rude, distracting, and giving us all ADD, perusing your email at all times is becoming increasingly acceptable, because, really, no one wants to sit through that meeting.

It's Good to Be CEO

cityfile · 06/22/09 07:48AM

According to Crain's, New York's 100 top-paid executives took home $1.2 billion in compensation last year. And a handful of them, it turns out, are execs who happen to work at banks that received bailouts from Washington: "Number four on the list is Goldman's CEO Lloyd Blankfein, with $42.9 million. Following him is Citigroup's CEO Vikram Pandit, raking in $38.2 million. Jamie Dimon, head of JPMorgan Chase, comes next in line with $35.7 million. Goldman and JPMorgan, which received $10 billion and $25 billion, respectively, in government aid, have recently moved to repay the funds. Citigroup is still saddled with the $45 billion in aid it's accepted." Topping the list, in case you're wondering, is Peter Kraus of Alliance Bernstein, who was paid $52 million just to take the job. But American taxpayers also had a hand in making 2008 a very good year for Kraus: In addition to his take from Alliance, he earned $25 million for the three months he put in at Merrill Lynch in late 2008. What Do You Buy the Man Who Has Everything?

cityfile · 06/19/09 02:50PM

Marc Jacobs has said he plans to tie the knot with Lorenzo Martone sometime this summer in Provincetown. But when? It doesn't really matter, of course, since you're not invited. But it will take place at some point over the next couple of months, and Provincetown is where it'll go down, according to a "source close to the couple" who spoke with WWD this week. But what if you are one of the lucky few who will be attending the most glam gay wedding ever? First off, you should know that you will not be able to just swoop down in your private jet: The Provincetown airport is a small one, which means "Jacobs' globe-trotting guests may have to travel to the Cape the old fashioned way: by boat." A horrifying prospect, yes. But a more daunting issue may be what to get the couple as a wedding gift. Fortunately, Fashion Week Daily has sorted it all out. You can look over some suggestions after the jump.

Gisele and Tom Expecting?

cityfile · 06/19/09 01:56PM

No one's uterus gets quite as much attention as the one attached to Gisele Bundchen, which is why you've probably seen about a thousand tabloid stories about her being pregnant—or not being pregnant—over the past few months. Us Weekly is wading back into it this afternoon, reporting that "multiple sources" have confirmed that the supe and husband Tom Brady are expecting their first child together. Could this be the one? Let's hope so. This may be our best shot at ensuring that Kate & Jon finally get kicked off the covers of celeb tabloids sometime this summer. [Us Weekly]
