Bloomberg News, Thy Taskmaster Is the 'Breaking News Points' System

Ryan Tate · 02/10/10 02:42PM

Bloomberg LP earned fabulous profits off its obsession with statistics. None, though, controls the day-to-day lives of the financial news drones like the "breaking news points" metrics scheme. Meet the most Stalinist production system in capitalist journalism.

Luke Russert Disproving Those Nepotism Charges One Story at a Time

Hamilton Nolan · 02/10/10 02:16PM

In your blizzardy Wednesday media column: Luke Russert does it the Luke Russert way, the NYT has no iPad comment, a new journalism moneymaking scheme, and David Remnick acts so haughty you'd think he runs America's best magazine or something.

Don't Forget Your Dog This Valentine's Day

cityfile · 02/10/10 02:13PM

As if it wasn't annoying enough that Hallmark has turned Valentine's Day into a monumental holiday, Purina would like to remind you that the holiday isn't just for humans. It's also the day when you're supposed to show your dog some serious affection as well. And it has the research to back it up: According to a survey conducted by the pet food company, 26 percent of dog owners "say 'I love you' once a day to their dogs—the same percentage that says 'I love you' once a day to a spouse or significant other."

Georgina Chapman is one-half of the duo behind the fashion label Marchesa. She's also married to movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, but it's not as if he had anything to do with the fashion house's success over the past few years. He didn't. It was simply the product of "passion and skill" on the part of Chapman and her partner, Keren Craig.

Heartbreak in Bryant Park

cityfile · 02/09/10 03:45PM

Two reasons why Fashion Week may not be quite as exciting when it begins on Thursday: 1. The snowpocalypse (which begins tonight and is expected to last through tomorrow night) will likely leave lots of slush in its wake and make navigating the city in heels extremely unpleasant; and 2. MTV's decision to clamp down on appearances by the cast of Jersey Shore may mean that you won't get to see Snooki sitting front row next to Anna Wintour, after all.
