cartooning

It's not that I am suggesting that you go to the New Yorker cartoon bank and try your hand at making a LOLNewYorkerCartoon. I don't care either way. I'm just putting it out there that this is an option.

This Faux 'New Yorker' Cartoon Is About If Frankenstein Lived In Nantucket

Emily Gould · 08/23/07 04:35PM

Actually, we have no idea what this cartoon is about. Maybe it's about perception and the impossibility of a universal objective reality? Why does Frankenstein wear sockless loafers and tie a sweater around his shoulders? The only insight we can gain from the artist is from his email, where he wrote, "Here it is. My faux New Yorker cartoon. It has that gritty 'scanned multiple times' look." Well, that it does. Does yours? Send it to Emily.

Is "'New Yorker' Humor" Purely Random?

Joshua Stein · 08/22/07 05:20PM

It was in the marbled thinking chamber that we were reading both Playboy and the New Yorker at once. A theory resulted: That the rate of humor found in New Yorker cartoons is the exact same as naturally occurring humor in the world. That is to say, in the case of any decent drawing set-up, one could pair a drawing with any caption and reasonably expect to laugh the same amount. We decided to test our theory of stochastic humor by mashing-up Playboy cartoons with New Yorker captions and vice versa.

'If I Did It' To Be Published By Fake Publisher You've Never Heard Of

Emily Gould · 08/15/07 12:40PM

Publisher's Marketplace reports, "We were surprised when media outlets made much of the news that a "New York publisher" had picked up rights to IF I DID IT. Last night, a statement was released showing the true nature of those first implications — the purchaser is Eric Kampmann's Beaufort Books (distributed by Midpoint), and a Reuters piece cites a publication date of October 3. Though it now appears to have been removed from their site, as of recently Beaufort described themselves this way: 'Beaufort offers an intriguing alternative to the traditional publishing model. We guide the publishing process, share in the risk, and offer the expertise and experience that are necessary to make any book a success.'" In other words, the O.J. book is for all intents and purposes being published by iUniverse. Pure class. Commenter MisterHippity "drew" this faux New Yorker cartoon, by the way.

This Faux 'New Yorker' Cartoon Is Taking This Way Too Seriously

Emily Gould · 08/14/07 02:30PM

"We strove to emulate the New Yorker's simultaneous contempt for new trends and lack of effort to criticize them," explain this cartoon's creators, Matthieu Comeau and Claire Renwick of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. Canadians are hopeless. Please continue to send your submissions to Emily.

This Faux New Yorker Cartoon Is So Meta

Emily Gould · 08/08/07 04:55PM

So meta that... uh... we don't really get it. We suppose that means it's doing its job! Can you stump us too? Probably. This heat (and bright sun!) makes us dumber than a box of hair. Send your attempts to Emily.

This Faux 'New Yorker' Cartoon Can Be Appreciated On Many Levels

Emily Gould · 08/07/07 04:20PM

At first when we saw this cartoon we thought that the woman in the lower lefthand corner was supposed to be Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie, and that this was a joke about that song "My Humps," which is now stuck in your head. But then we noticed the woman's visible lady-cleft and realized it was actually meant to be a joke about the word "cameltoe." And then we asked ourselves: "Is the song 'My Humps' actually about cameltoe? Is Fergie just that much of a genius?" Please continue to send your cartoons to Emily.

This Faux New Yorker Cartoon Has A Rabbi

Emily Gould · 08/03/07 03:50PM

God, we're suckers for Jumor! (Jewmor?) You know. Jewy humor. Anyway, this is another submission from the illustrious creator of "bivalve curious." Want to try to break that guy's lock on this thing? Well, don't be shellfish with your submissions; send 'em to Emily.

This Faux New Yorker Cartoon Could Almost Be A Real One

Emily Gould · 07/30/07 03:40PM

We almost disqualified this cartoon because it reeked so hard of "auditioning for the real thing." However, it made us chuckle, which almost no real New Yorker cartoon has ever done, except this one, which used to hang in our cubicle. Congratulations to submitter "smwerwin." Please continue to send your submissions to Emily.
