Which Hemsworth Brother Will Reign Supreme?

Louis Peitzman · 04/15/12 04:40PM

The Hunger Games dominated the box office this weekend — the fourth in a row — but there is serious competition on the horizon. All-star superhero flick The Avengers opens May 4, with a good chance of making big money. Of course, this is America, and we love stories of two brothers facing off against one another. So, hey, let's make this about Liam Hemsworth vs. Chris Hemsworth.

Titanic Fans Are No Match for Hunger Games Devotees

Louis Peitzman · 04/08/12 12:32PM

A $17.4 million weekend gross for Titanic isn't exactly sad — but it's a little disappointing, given that at one point, Titanic was the highest grossing film of all time. James Cameron's 3D conversion could not compete with The Hunger Games, which once again took the top box-office spot, this time with $33.5 million. The film's current domestic gross is now more than $300 million.

The Odds Are Still in The Hunger Games' Favor

Louis Peitzman · 04/01/12 12:13PM

While tremendous box office success from Mirror Mirror would make a hilarious April Fool's joke, that's just not the case. For the second weekend in a row, The Hunger Games trounced the competition, earning $61.1 million. The film has now grossed more than $250 million with record-breaking speed.

The Hunger Games Slaughters the Competition for Our Entertainment

Louis Peitzman · 03/24/12 01:20PM

That movie no one will shut up about is setting new records already — The Hunger Games' $68.3 million opening gives it the biggest opening day of any non-sequel, and the fifth-biggest opening of all time. Midnight showings accounted for $19.7 million of the film's take, which gives you a sense of how devoted fans of this series are.

John Carter Proves No Match for The Lorax

Louis Peitzman · 03/10/12 12:24PM

The much-hyped John Carter didn't exactly live up to box office expectations, earning only $9.8 million on Friday. Although it stands to take in a more respectable $27 million through the weekend, that's still chump change compared to the $250 million the studio threw down to make it.

Meet The Lorax, 2012's Biggest Weekend Opening Yet

Louis Peitzman · 03/04/12 03:49PM

Looks like that aggressive ad campaign did its job after all: The Lorax earned $70.7 million this weekend, giving it the biggest opening weekend so far this year. In second place, Project X, with a comparatively unimpressive $20.8 million. Should've cast Zac Efron and Taylor Swift, guys.

Episode I Proves More Disappointing Than Ever

Louis Peitzman · 02/11/12 01:41PM

While I can't speak to the quality of 3D conversion, I can recount The Hollywood Reporter's weekend box office update. They might be freaking out about the "overperformance" of The Vow and Safe House, but I'm more interested in the re-release of arguably the most hated installment of the Star Wars franchise. You could make a claim for the Star Wars Holiday Special, but that didn't have Jake Lloyd or Jar Jar.)

Daniel Radcliffe Still Bigger Box Office Draw Than Whales

Louis Peitzman · 02/04/12 03:40PM

Well, we can't give all the credit to Daniel Radcliffe, but — we kind of can, right? The Boy Who Lived as Harry Potter For a Decade has moved on to a starring role in Woman in Black. Despite low expectations, Reuters reports that the horror film opened strong at $8.3 million on Friday. (It's worth noting that CBS Films predicted $11 million for the entire weekend.) The other big surprise was Fox's teens-with-superpowers thriller Chronicle, which actually beat out Woman in Black on Friday. Relax, Dan Rad fans — his movie is expected to surpass its competition.

Liam Neeson Tops Box Office, But Katherine Heigl Remains Relevant

Louis Peitzman · 01/28/12 12:03PM

It should come as no surprise that The Grey AKA Liam Neeson Fights Some Goddamn Wolves topped the box office on Friday. The Hollywood Reporter predicts an $18 million weekend, which would be more impressive if it weren't competing against so many shitty movies. In second place, the Katherine Heigl vehicle One for the Money, which has the distinct disadvantage of no wolves and a fairly contentious star. Even Heigl, at one point, admitted that no one liked her.

America Conquered by Ghosts

Richard Lawson · 10/24/11 09:55AM

A huge record-setting debut for the third movie in the Paranormal Activity franchise means that Halloween is upon us. Also today: The robots continue to fight on, Footloose keeps dancing, and the Musketeers meet their match.

Dancing Teens Slain by Robots

Richard Lawson · 10/17/11 09:55AM

Though they had spirit and moxie and other youthful energies on their side, the kids of Footloose proved no match for Real Steel's battle bots in the box office arena. RIP, Ren.

Everyone Wants Hugh Jackman's Greased-Up Steel

Richard Lawson · 10/10/11 10:40AM

Yup, the boxing robot movie was top dog robot this weekend, with little competition in sight. Politics came in second and, somewhere far down the list, lurched the human centipede.

Dolphins Win, Every Time

Richard Lawson · 10/03/11 10:26AM

Against the odds, a feel-good story about a fish of some sort beat all the competitors this weekend. Meanwhile baseball is more popular than cancer, though cancer is respectably popular.

Brad Pitt Devoured by Lions

Richard Lawson · 09/26/11 10:27AM

The lions of Pride Rock reigned supreme again this week — even golden lion-human Brad Pitt couldn't dethrone them. And Pitt was almsot defeated by a dolphin as well. What do the animals have against Brad Pitt??

It's 1994 All Over Again

Richard Lawson · 09/19/11 10:49AM

The Lion King is number one at the box office, so it must be, right? Meanwhile in the future, a disease movie holds on, a dark thriller does OK, and Sarah Jessica Parker stalls out.

Everyone Loves to Blame Gwyneth Paltrow

Richard Lawson · 09/12/11 09:50AM

On a slow weekend, a movie about a disease disaster started by Gwyneth Paltrow reigned supreme. Also this weekend, mixed martial arts made a wan debut, The Help continued to rage on, and a few people saw a strange movie.

Emma Stone and Viola Davis Have One Crazy Summer

Richard Lawson · 09/06/11 10:05AM

Labor Day weekend is a pretty slow weekend for box office, hardly boffo at all, but one steady hit continued to perform despite the distraction of cookouts and beach going.
