It’s the right’s turn to top in the flip-fucking session that is the struggle for LGBT rights in the United States. The New York Times reports that officials in 11 states—Maine, Arizona, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia, and Wisconsin—have sued the federal government over guidance issued by President Obama to allow transgender students to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity, regardless of what’s printed on their birth certificates.

After launching an effort to redefine “bullying,” supporters of North Carolina’s anti-LGBT bathroom law apparently have a new term they’d like to revisit: revenge.

The Department of Justice is filing a federal civil rights lawsuit against North Carolina, Governor Pat McCrory, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety and the University of North Carolina as a result of the state’s “bathroom bill” known as HB2 (or the Public Facilities Act), announced Attorney General Loretta Lynch at news conference this afternoon.

In what shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone with sense or compassion, North Carolina’s so-called “bathroom bill” HB2 violates federal law, according to the Justice Department. A letter sent to North Carolina Governor Pat MrCrory on Wednesday from department officials says that HB2 violates the Civil Rights Act, reports The Charlotte Observer. McCrory has until Monday to address the violation “by confirming that the State will not comply with or implement HB2.”

Earlier today, we published video footage of a trans woman named Pearl Love being taunted last week on the subway with transphobic, homophobic, and racist slurs and then being assaulted by an as-yet-unidentified woman. After publishing that post, I talked to Love by phone, and she contextualized the incident within the broader bigotry and discrimination that she commonly experiences.

In an ostensibly noble attempt to tease out the logic behind North Carolina’s discriminatory H2 law, Megyn Kelly interviewed Governor Pat McCrory last night. And for a moment, her practical perspective (made more powerful coming from someone who’s been experiencing women’s bathrooms for her entire life) cut through the bigoted bullshit.

Once upon a time, Caitlyn Jenner dreamed of being Ted Cruz’s “trans ambassador.” Many people pointed out that this was silly because Cruz is a virulent bigot, and virulent bigots make terrible bedfellows for LGBT people. Cruz reiterated his bigotry last week, by voicing support for bathroom bills like North Carolina’s H2, which stigmatize trans people under the false notion of “protecting” women and children. “There is no greater evil than predators and if the law says that any man, if he chooses can enter a women’s restroom, a little girl’s restroom and stay there and he cannot be removed because he simply says at that moment he feels like a woman, you’re opening the door for predators,” said Cruz.

The city council of Oxford, Alabama unanimously passed a public ordinance last night making it illegal to use a public restroom bearing a gender-specific label that doesn’t match that of a person’s birth certificate. The proposed fine for such an infraction is $500 or six months of jail time. Of course, that’s if they catch you.

The British government has a new message for vacationers hoping to soak up sun in the American South: Watch out, y’all.

Citing “misinformation, misinterpretation, confusion, a lot of passion and frankly, selective outrage and hypocrisy,” North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory has issued an executive order amending his state’s outrageous House Bill 2, which, among other things, requires transgender people to use bathrooms that correspond to the gender listed on their birth certificates in government buildings, and kills local anti-discrimination ordinances. So if you said, “Hey, that’s fucked up!” when you read about this law, well, you were just misinformed and here’s some new information to digest. This how McCrory delivers “common-sense solutions to complex issues.”

Last night’s Daily Show was devoted to the anti-trans measures sweeping the nation in the name of “religious freedom” and in the form of “bathroom bills,” which hatefully and illogically require trans people to use public bathrooms whose labels match the gender on their birth certificates. One segment focused on trans panic featured Jessica Williams interviewing a variety of trans people about their experiences with transphobia, including Megan Taylor, who was arrested last year for being trans and held in jail for eight days because she wasn’t carrying a prescription for a drug in her hormone replacement therapy.

At a press conference yesterday, North Carolina Governor Pat McCory said he felt “blindsided” by a question about the implications of the “religious freedom” bill he signed last week. If he felt blindsided, imagine how the LGBT citizens of his state that have been freshly stripped of their rights feel!

Governor Nathan Deal has announced that he will veto a bill passed by Georgia’s Senate and House that purported to protect the “religious freedom” of the state’s citizens, but in practice would have given faith-based organizations legal rights to discriminate.

Trans people are not a threat, but they are threatened. There are no recorded incidents of trans people attacking cisgender people in bathrooms. In fact, trans people experience hate violence at rates disproportionate to their cisgender counterparts, and sometimes these anti-trans attacks occur in bathrooms. It’s counterintuitive for someone who presents as female to use a restroom designated for males (and vice versa), and all the proof of the resulting absurdity you need is captured in the picture above, which transgender woman Kelly Lauren posted on Facebook in November in response to the public’s voting down of the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance: “Houston, do you REALLY want me in the same restroom as your husband or boyfriend?”

The farcical degree to which Caitlyn Jenner was willing to blindly defend Republicans was on screaming display during last night’s second season premiere of her reality show, I Am Cait. Jenner is famously conservative (last week, The Advocate published a profile in which she voiced interest in being Ted Cruz’s “trans ambassador”), but last night’s episode vividly illustrated just how little logic or thought she’s put into that affiliation given just how little Republicans advocate for (and how often they advocate against) LGBT rights.
