Last Friday, David Paterson insinuated that he was the victim of racial bias, suggesting that a racially motivated campaign had been organized to keep him from running for governor this fall. A good deal of criticism immediately followed (and today Paterson attempted to back away from his remarks). But if Paterson had been planning to stick with that line of attack over the weekend and possibly coordinate a march on Albany with Al Sharpton, well, that doesn't appear to have been on his agenda. A few hours after raising the race issue on Friday, he cruised out to Water Mill to attend a country western-themed fundraiser at the home of author Jay McInerney and heiress Anne Hearst, where he had an opportunity to play a little charity blackjack with the likes of Kathy Hilton and Countess Luann de Lesseps. Anne Hearst, heir to the Hearst family fortune (and sister of notorious kidnappee Patty), is a socialite and a contributing editor at Town & Country. The granddaughter of William Randolph Hearst, the publishing titan who inspired Citizen Kane, Anne was born in Beverly Hills and raised in the suburbs of San Francisco. After a stint in college and a little trouble with the law (she was arrested in 1975 for trying to cross U.S.-Canadian border with a bag of amphetamines in the car), Anne settled in New York in the early '80s and soon became a regular presence at galas and parties around town. She met her eventual third husband, author Jay McInerney, at a club in 1986, but lost touch with him until 2005, when the two met again in the Hamptons and were soon married in a 2007 ceremony officiated by Rudy Giuliani. She's been a contributing editor at Town & Country, a Hearst Corp.-owned title, since the 1990s.

The four avid readers of puppy-eyed cirrhosis-livered author Jay McInerney's blog on House and Garden might be aware that the author was planning on leaving the Upper East Side apartment he shared with his wife, Anne "The Man" Hearst. More than kin and less than kind Braden Keil reports the duo have now bought their own home and garden over in what we like to call N.Y.U. Village, at 25 E. 9th Street.
