American Idol: The Haley Conspiracy

Richard Lawson · 05/05/11 12:20PM

Well! Last night's episode of Professor J.J. Blunderful's Mysterious Song Machine was certainly a doozy, wasn't it? Quite the dramatic episode of television, was it not? Everyone was singing their guts out, spilling them on the floor, blood and other viscera soaking the stage. Gross!

American Idol: Only the Weak Survive

Richard Lawson · 04/29/11 11:48AM

On last night's episode of American Dung Rodeo, yet another kid was executed for our grim enjoyment. Was it who we expected? No, no it was not! It was, truly, something of a shock.

American Idol: Long Live the King

Richard Lawson · 04/28/11 11:46AM

Last night's episode of American Dream Explosion featured our six remaining tributes, bloody and beaten but still belting on, paying homage to Carole King. And darn it if they didn't turn in a good show! Yeah, it was patchy and raggedy as all their shows are, but it was also fun and felt fueled with that kind of white-knuckle desperation that really makes these shows entertaining.

America Is Completely Out of Talent

Brian Moylan · 04/26/11 03:17PM

Tonight NBC rolls out the first episode of its much-hyped, overly-complicated singing competition The Voice. This is a mistake on so many levels, mostly because America has depleted its talent pool to the point of exhaustion. With our countless number of reality talent competitions, there is no one good enough to be on these shows anymore.

American Idol: Ryan's Hope

Richard Lawson · 04/22/11 11:04AM

Well, another one went down last night, falling in battle on the blood-soaked fields of American Idol. It was sad, like all endings are sad, but it was about time for this person. They'd been almost all the way through the wringer before. Now they're finally wrung out.

Here's Katy Perry and Kanye West's Odd American Idol Performance

Matt Cherette · 04/21/11 10:57PM

On tonight's American Idol results show, plastic bagged songbird Katy Perry appeared to grace us with her underwhelming live voice during an alien-themed performance of "ET," her new duet with Kanye West. Then West himself showed up—fur vest and all—though nobody seemed to even notice.

American Idol: The 10-Year Itch

Richard Lawson · 04/21/11 12:03PM

Last night's installment of Glitter Rodeo 3000 finally, finally, brought us into the present. Yes the theme this week was blessedly not "Songs You Might Find in an Old Haunted Jukebox" or "Very Much Your Daddy's Top 40." It was "Songs Written in the Last 10 Years." Ha, that's all, just songs from the new century.

Kara DioGuardi Says She Was Molested

Seth Abramovitch · 04/19/11 03:02AM

In her new memoir, A Helluva High Note, former American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi revealed that she was repeatedly molested at age 11 by a family friend in his late teens. She also mentions a date rape by a famous music producer. Memoirs: They're a helluva way to air out your closet.

American Idol: Make No Bones About It

Richard Lawson · 04/15/11 11:12AM

One more down in this brutal competition, and finally someone with a Y chromosome. (Yup, that means Ryan was safe!) Maybe things are starting to even out on this lopsided season of American Sparklehorror. Maybe! Or maybe it was just a fluke.

American Idol: You Oughtn't Be in Pictures

Richard Lawson · 04/14/11 11:21AM

Last night's installment of Ryan Seacrest's Fantasy Island involved the eight surviving kids yelling at us about movies. Specifically, they sang songs from movies. That was the theme. Only, it was hardly a theme at all.

American Idol: The Leaning Tower of Pia

Richard Lawson · 04/08/11 10:35AM

On last night's brutes magutes elimination episode, America's strangest Republican primary yet saw the too-soon departure of one of the season's strongest voices. What happened? And how can we continue to live in a world where such terrible things occur? Let's figure it out.

American Idol: Cock of the Rock

Richard Lawson · 04/07/11 11:37AM

Last night's episode of America's greatest shining whirligig took us on a tour of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a ghost-filled place where musical legends will spend eternity in our greatest approximation of hell, the city of Cleveland.

Ryan Seacrest Will Earn $55 Million This Year: Discuss

Seth Abramovitch · 04/07/11 01:31AM

There will come a day in the not-so-distant future when Ryan Seacrest will squirm his way into every corner and every minute of your waking life. That day is, like, tomorrow. A story in The Hollywood Reporter estimates his 2011 gross income (maybe even net? He's like the GE of diminutive on-air personalities) will be somewhere in the vicinity of $55 million. How does that figure break down, exactly? Let's count the ways.

American Idol: Two is as Bad as One

Madeleine Davies · 04/01/11 12:59PM

The ax fell twice on American Idol last night, whittling our bruised and bloody band of sing babies down to an uneven nine. Of course, they couldn't let the two fallen contestants slip quickly and quietly away. No, first they had to chew the scenery a bit with even more side acts than usual. The time of the single group number is over and now the Idol hopefuls are being broken down into groups of twos, threes and fours to sing and, presumably, breed.
