SUV Crashes Into Crowd at Tiananmen Square, Killing 5 and Injuring 38
An SUV plowed into a crowd of tourists in Beijing's Tiananmen Square on Monday, killing at least five people and injuring 38.
Not long past noon, the SUV veered from the street and onto the sidewalk between the gate of the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. The vehicle reportedly drove on the sidewalk for 500 meters, running over police officers and tourists, before crashing into a stone bridge and bursting into flames.
Xinhua reports the incident is under investigation, though it appears to have been intentional, according to the Los Angeles Times.
All three people in the SUV were killed, as were tourists from the Philippines and China's Guangdong Province.
