Steubenville Rapist Released After Serving Two-Year Sentence

Trent Mays, one of two Steubenville high school football players convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl in August 2012, was released Tuesday from juvenile detention after serving a two year sentence.
Mays and his co-defendant Ma'lik Richmond were convicted in March 2013 for raping a teenager from West Virginia at a party. The case divided Steubenville and drew national attention after Anonymous and other online activists uncovered a social media trail about the assault, including photos, a disturbing 12-minute video, and other details.
Richmond, who received a one-year sentence, was released last January.
The victim's family released a statement on Wednesday:
"We hope the guilty parties hold a higher standard of morals and values as their rehabilitation continues. We also hope they realize the magnitude of life-long pain that they have caused the victim, and pray that the memory of their crime lives in their souls as a constant reminder to treat women with dignity and respect."
Adam Nemann, Mays's attorney, told WTOV that Mays will be placed on probationary status and will report to court soon for a hearing about his status as a sex offender.
