Human remains found in a shallow grave on the side of the road in Guerrero, Mexico were identified as those of Harry Devert, a New Yorker who has been missing for six months.

Devert traveled to Mexico on a motorcycle trip from New York to South America, and was last heard from in a WhatsApp message to his girlfriend dated January 25. From CNN:

"Just got an hour and a half long escort out of some area it was too dangerous for me to be," the message said. "Stopping for lunch and ... voila Internet. ... Gonna get back on the road soon. Apparently there's another military escort waiting for me in some other town... I'm running way late because of the crazy military stuff...hopefully get a chance to talk to you tonight when I (hopefully) finally arrive."

Mexican authorities identified the remains as Devert's with a DNA test. They were found in two separate bags about 300 miles from where he was last seen, alongside his Kawasaki motorcycle and "10 packages of what appeared to be narcotics (marijuana and cocaine)."

Mexico's federal prosecutors will handle the investigation into Devert's death. Said Darren Del Sardo, his mother's attorney:

"This is horrible. The major component now is to try to find out who is responsible for this and hope that the Mexican authorities bring them to justice as soon as possible."
